The SSC CHSL syllabus for 2026 is in one official place: SSC’s CHSL 2026 notice, uploaded on 7 Sep 2026, with the pattern in paras 13.8–13.9 and the syllabus in paras 13.10–13.11. It matters because the 2026 notice gives each subject its own sectional timer, which the older SSC scheme PDF doesn’t show. The exam has two computer-based tiers. Tier 1 only shortlists you; Tier 2 Sections I and II decide your rank, and you must also pass the Computer Knowledge Test and the skill or typing test. This page covers the exam pattern, which document to trust, the Tier 1 and Tier 2 syllabus subject by subject, qualifying marks and merit, what SSC publishes about weightage, and posts, pay levels and exam languages.

What is in the SSC CHSL 2026 syllabus? Two computer-based tiers. Tier 1 has four parts of 25 questions each: English Language, General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude and General Awareness. Tier 2 has Maths and Reasoning (Section I), English and General Awareness (Section II), a Computer Knowledge Test (Section III) and a skill or typing test (Section IV). The 2026 notice gives each subject its own sectional timer, which the older SSC scheme PDF doesn’t show.
Official syllabus PDF: the SSC CHSL 2026 notice on ssc.gov.in, uploaded on 7 Sep 2026. The pattern is in paras 13.8–13.9 and the syllabus in paras 13.10–13.11. See which document to trust below.

Tier 2 syllabus
Tier 2 repeats the Tier 1 subjects at a higher level, adds Computer Knowledge, and ends with a skill or typing test (paras 13.9 and 13.11).
Section I: Mathematical Abilities and Reasoning (paras 13.11.1–13.11.2)
- Mathematical Abilities: the same arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and trigonometry as Tier 1, plus statistics and probability: mean, median, mode, standard deviation and simple probability. For the extra statistics, see our SSC maths books page.
- Reasoning and General Intelligence: the same topic list as Tier 1, para 13.10.2.
Section II: English Language and Comprehension, and General Awareness (paras 13.11.3–13.11.4)
- English: vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure and the Tier 1 question types, plus comprehension of two or more passages. The notice says at least one should be simple, based on a book or story, and another should be based on a current-affairs editorial or report. Reading one newspaper editorial a day is direct practice for this.
- General Awareness: the same wording as Tier 1. It carries 20 questions in a 20-minute block.
Section III: Computer Knowledge Test (para 13.11.5)
Qualifying only, 15 questions in 15 minutes. The four official blocks:
- Computer basics: organisation of a computer, CPU, input/output devices, memory and its organisation, back-up devices, ports, Windows Explorer, keyboard shortcuts.
- Software: the Windows operating system, and the basics of MS Word, MS Excel and PowerPoint.
- Internet and e-mail: browsing and searching, downloading and uploading, managing an e-mail account, e-banking.
- Networking and cyber security: networking devices and protocols, security threats (hacking, viruses, worms, Trojans) and how to prevent them.

The skill test is compulsory for every DEO candidate; no one is exempted (para 13.9.13.6). The typing test is compulsory for LDC/JSA candidates, except PwD candidates certified by the Civil Surgeon as unable to type; this exemption doesn’t extend to visually or hearing impaired candidates (paras 13.9.13.7(vii) and 17.6). - Tier 1 is used only to shortlist candidates for Tier 2 (para 17.2). Scores from multiple shifts are normalised (para 13.2).
- Final merit comes from the aggregate of Tier 2 Sections I and II only. You must also pass Section III (computer) and Section IV (skill or typing) (para 17.9).
- Cut-offs can differ for three streams: DEO in the para 8.1 departments, other DEO posts, and LDC/JSA (para 17.3).
Weightage: what SSC publishes and what it doesn’t
SSC publishes the number of questions per section, shown in the pattern table: 25 per Tier 1 subject; 30 maths, 30 reasoning, 40 English, 20 GA and 15 computer in Tier 2. It doesn’t publish how many questions come from each topic. Topic-wise “weightage” tables you see online are a coaching site’s own count from past papers, not SSC’s. Use the official answer keys (below) to see what was asked in recent papers.

| Reasoning | R.S. Aggarwal, A Modern Approach to Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning (S.Chand) | Revised Edition 2024-25 · 9789364685979 | Only if picture-based questions are new to you | ₹520 Amazon (sold by zombozone, a third-party seller, on 27 Oct 2026; MRP ₹899). The listing title mentions 2026-2027, but the edition is the 2024-25 revised edition: match ISBN 9789364685979 |
There’s no single good book for the Computer Knowledge Test. The four blocks in para 13.11.5 are short enough to cover from free material. For more on each title, see Lucent GK, Neetu Singh English, and our SSC CGL books guide, whose Tier 1 picks overlap with CHSL.
What buyers say (Amazon, 27 Oct 2026):
- Disha 22 Year-wise: 4.2★ from 59 ratings. That is a small sample, so read the latest buyer comments on the listing before you order.
- R.S. Aggarwal Verbal & Non-Verbal: buyers find it thorough across reasoning topics and useful for SSC and banking exams, but several report wrong questions or solutions, and views on value for money are split.
- R.S. Aggarwal Quantitative Aptitude: buyers like the simple explanations and the volume of practice questions, but many mention printing mistakes, so check a solution when an answer looks off.
Edition and copy check: the current edition is the 7th, titled “22 Year-wise” with papers from 2025 back to 2012. If a listing shows a different edition number or stops at 2024 papers, it’s an older printing. Match ISBN 9789371862769 on the copyright page when the book arrives, and return it if it doesn’t match. For Lucent, ignore look-alike listings priced well below ₹274 whose title or seller name doesn’t match Lucent’s book. Blurred printing, loose binding or a price far below the publisher’s are signs of a pirated copy. “Free PDF” versions of current books are pirated and often swap in old papers.
Free official practice
- Answer keys: after each tier SSC places tentative answer keys on ssc.gov.in, and you can challenge a key for ₹50 per question. Final keys are uploaded after the result (para 13.3). Use them to see which topics came up in each shift.
- Timed practice: solve each subject in a strict 15-minute block for Tier 1, because the sectional timer closes the part when time is up.
- Typing: practise on a computer keyboard, not a phone, for 10 minutes at a time. If you chose Hindi typing, practise in Mangal font with the keyboard layout you’ll use on the day.
- More solved papers: our Kiran solved papers and SSC PYQ books pages cover other paper collections.
FAQs
What is the SSC CHSL 2026 Tier 1 syllabus?
Four parts of 25 questions each: English Language (grammar, vocabulary, cloze and comprehension), General Intelligence (verbal and non-verbal reasoning), Quantitative Aptitude (arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry and statistical charts) and General Awareness (current events, everyday science and static GK). The full topic list is in para 13.10 of the 2026 notice.
Did the SSC CHSL syllabus or pattern change in 2026?
The question counts match SSC’s two-page scheme PDF dated January 2025, but the 2026 notice adds sectional timers that the scheme PDF doesn’t show: 15 minutes per Tier 1 subject, and fixed time splits inside Tier 2 Sections I and II (paras 13.8 and 13.9).
What is the skill test in SSC CHSL?
It is Section IV of Tier 2. DEO candidates must type an English passage at 8,000 key depressions per hour, or 15,000 for DEO posts in the departments named in para 8.1, in 15 minutes. LDC/JSA candidates take a 10-minute typing test at 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi. Both are qualifying only (paras 13.9.13.6–13.9.13.7).
Is there negative marking in SSC CHSL Tier 2?
Yes. One mark is deducted for each wrong answer in Sections I, II and III of Tier 2, where each question carries 3 marks (para 13.9.11). In Tier 1 the deduction is 0.50 marks per wrong answer.
Is the Computer Knowledge Test counted in the final merit?
No. Section III is qualifying only, so you must pass it but its marks don’t add to your merit score. Merit is based on Tier 2 Sections I and II only (paras 13.9.12 and 17.9).
What typing speed is needed in Hindi for SSC CHSL?
30 words per minute, about 9,000 key depressions per hour, for LDC/JSA candidates who choose Hindi. The English speed is 35 wpm. Hindi typing must be done in Mangal font, and the medium you choose in the form can’t be changed later (para 13.9.13.7, items ii and viii).
Is SSC CHSL easy to crack?
The notice sets the minimum qualifying marks at 30% for UR, 25% for OBC/EWS and 20% for other categories, but selection depends on cut-offs set by the number of vacancies, about 2,536 this year. Strict sectional timers and negative marking in both tiers mean timed practice with real papers matters as much as knowing the topics.
Where can I download the official SSC CHSL syllabus PDF?
The CHSL 2026 notice on ssc.gov.in is the official syllabus, in paras 13.10 and 13.11. The separate scheme PDF on the same site is dated January 2025 and has no topic list.
Are the SSC CGL and CHSL syllabuses the same?
The four Tier 1 subjects overlap closely, but CGL maths goes further, CGL Tier 2 has extra papers for some posts, and CHSL has a qualifying skill or typing test for every post. Compare them with our SSC CGL syllabus page.
When is the SSC CHSL 2026 Tier 1 exam?
SSC’s Important Notice dated 1 Oct 2026 gives proposed Tier 1 dates of 30 November to 31 December 2026, and its corrigendum of 26 Oct 2026 didn’t change them. Your exact date and shift will be on your admit card on ssc.gov.in.
