The Neetu Singh English book most aspirants need is English for General Competitions Vol. 1 (KD Publication, 2026 edition), in English or the Hindi-bilingual version. Vol. 2 is an older practice bank, and Class Notes repeats Vol. 1’s ground. This guide covers which book suits SSC CGL, CHSL, CPO, bank and CDS aspirants, a chapter order, how to use it, and alternatives such as S.P. Bakshi and Blackbook.

Decision chart: should you buy Neetu Singh's English for General Competitions Vol. 1? It is for SSC and bank-exam aspirants, beginner to intermediate. If you own S.P. Bakshi, skip it. If you own Vol. 1 already, keep it. If your coaching teaches from KD's English Class Notes, use that instead. Otherwise buy the 2026 Vol. 1, bilingual or English edition. Skip Vol. 2 this year and avoid the overpriced "2025 edition" Hindi listing.
You need one grammar rulebook, not two. This chart shows when Vol. 1 is that book, and which language edition to pick.

Vol 1 vs Vol 2 vs Class Notes vs the PYQ books

KD Publication sells several English titles under Neetu Singh’s name. They do different jobs.

Book What it is Buy it if Our call
Vol. 1 (English for General Competitions, formerly From Plinth to Paramount) 34-chapter grammar and vocabulary rulebook, 485 pages, 2026 edition You can’t yet explain why an answer is right Buy, in your language
Vol. 2 A practice bank on the same grammar topics; KD’s latest edition is still 2023 You’ve finished Vol. 1 and want more drills, and can find a clean copy Skip for 2027: it predates recent SSC papers
English Class Notes (bilingual) Lecture notes covering much the same rules as Vol. 1, 2026 Your course teaches from it Skip unless it matches your classes
Golden Book 247 Solved Papers SSC English solved papers from 2016; a bookseller’s contents list stops at 2022 papers You want older SSC papers in one volume Skip for 2027; use recent papers instead
Detecting Error 2800+ and Sentence Improvement 1350+ KD’s topic drill books (2026 editions) Error spotting or sentence improvement is your weak area Optional, one topic at a time
Spoken English 2026 A speaking-practice book You want to speak English for interviews or daily use Skip for written exams

Plinth to Paramount is Vol. 1, not a separate book. Some guides still list it as its own pick. If you own a copy under that name in good shape, you don’t need the 2026 print.

What about Vol. 2 for vocabulary? Some comparison blogs describe Vol. 2 as the vocabulary-and-PYQ volume. KD’s own contents list for Vol. 2 is grammar practice (verbs, tense, confusing nouns and adjectives, and so on), and Vol. 1 already ends with the vocabulary chapters. For vocabulary, use a dedicated book (below).

Spoken English: which language? KD’s own product page doesn’t say. KD’s Amazon listing labels it a Hindi edition, while its Flipkart listing (26 Oct 2026) said English, and the two listings give different page counts. KD’s Amazon store labels other English books “Hindi Edition” too, so look at the sample pages before you buy. For SSC or bank written English it’s a skip either way.

Which exam, which book

Exam English paper asks Neetu Singh’s role Pair with
SSC CGL Tier I and Tier II: grammar and error spotting, vocabulary, sentence improvement, voice and narration, sentence shuffling, cloze and comprehension (CGL 2026 notice) Vol. 1 is the grammar base Recent PYQs and a vocabulary book. Bank PO and Clerk Long passages, cloze, error spotting; descriptive writing at PO mains (SBI PO mains handout) Vol. 1 for grammar rules only Daily reading and timed RC sets; SBI PO and IBPS PO guides; for the GA section, banking awareness books
CDS A separate English paper Vol. 1 for grammar Vocabulary and comprehension practice; our CDS books guide

Chapter order and how to use Vol. 1

KD lists Vol. 1’s 34 chapters in this order: Verb (basic), Tense, Passive Voice, Narration, Question Tag, Subject–Verb Agreement, Conditional Sentences, Verb (advanced), Gerund, Infinitive, Participle, Inversion, Mood, Noun, Pronoun, Adjective, Conjunction, Article, Preposition, Adverb, Parallelism, Superfluous Expressions, Phrasal Verbs, Sentence Improvement, Words Often Confused, Vocabularies, Synonyms, Antonyms, One-Word Substitution, Idioms and Phrases, and Spellings.

A beginner’s order:

  1. Chapters 1–7 first (verbs, tense, voice, narration, agreement, conditionals). Most error-spotting and sentence-improvement questions turn on these.
  2. Parts of speech next (Noun to Adverb, chapters 14–20). Do Articles and Prepositions slowly; they cost marks out of proportion to their size.
  3. Advanced verbs and structure (chapters 8–13, then Parallelism and Superfluous Expressions).
  4. Sentence Improvement and Words Often Confused once the rules are in place.
  5. Vocabulary chapters every day in parallel, 20–30 minutes, not saved for the end.

For each chapter: read the rules, do the chapter’s practice questions without looking back, then solve that topic’s SSC PYQs the same week. Write every rule you got wrong on one page, and revise from that page rather than re-reading the chapter. Aspirants on Reddit who finished English describe revising Vol. 1 many times, plus a separate vocabulary book and a PYQ bank.

Hindi medium: read the rule in Hindi in the bilingual edition, then test yourself on English sentences only. The exam is in English, so your practice has to be too. Our SSC CGL books in Hindi guide covers the other subjects.

If you keep losing marks in…

Losing marks in Go back to Then
Error spotting (verbs, tense, agreement) Vol. 1, chapters 1–7 Error-spotting PYQs, timed
Articles and prepositions Vol. 1, chapters 18–19 Ten fresh sentences a day
Sentence improvement Vol. 1, chapters 21–24 Sentence-improvement PYQs
Voice and narration Vol. 1, chapters 3–4 PYQs by type; these are rule-based marks
Synonyms, antonyms, idioms, one-word substitution A vocabulary book (Blackbook) and PYQ words Daily revision of your own word list
Cloze and comprehension Not a grammar problem Daily editorial reading and timed passages
A rule you know but misapply Not a book problem More timed questions, then review each error

Only the first kinds send you back to the book. Rules you knew but misapplied need timed practice, not another read.

Alternatives, honestly

Book Use it for Choose it over Neetu Singh if Our take
S.P. Bakshi, Objective General English (Arihant) Grammar, vocabulary and comprehension in one big book You want English-only explanations and a larger exercise bank Buy this or Vol. 1, not both. Studyblink rates Bakshi stronger on vocabulary and more detailed on rules, and Neetu Singh simpler for beginners; its review of Bakshi notes some examples feel dated next to recent SSC papers
Blackbook of English Vocabulary (Nikhil Gupta) Vocabulary from past exam papers, 2026 edition (English or bilingual) Never instead; it’s a vocabulary partner The vocabulary book SSC Tides and PracticeMock pair with grammar books
Word Power Made Easy (Norman Lewis) Learning words through roots You enjoy building vocabulary slowly Good for root-based learning, less exam-targeted than Blackbook; many reprints are listed, so check the publisher
From Plinth to Paramount — — The old name for Vol. 1, not an alternative
Kiran or another recent PYQ book Real SSC questions by topic Never instead; it’s the practice partner Better than Vol. 2 for a 2027 exam

Is Neetu Singh Vol. 1 enough?

For grammar rules, yes: it can be your only rulebook. For the whole English section, no. You still need vocabulary work, recent PYQs and daily reading for cloze and comprehension. Bank PO aspirants also need descriptive-writing practice with feedback, which no grammar book gives.

What buyers say

  • Content wins. On KD’s Flipkart listing for Vol. 1, recent buyers confirm genuine 2026 copies, and Amazon’s review summary for the earlier edition says buyers find it very useful for SSC English and the price fair.
  • Paper and binding lose. The most repeated complaint is page and binding quality, and some copies arrive damaged. One recent buyer of the bilingual 2026 edition found it too point-to-point, with too little explanation.
  • Class Notes: Flipkart buyers praise the simple language; on Amazon one buyer felt it isn’t deep enough to be your only English book.
  • Vol. 2: buyers valued the question volume but complained about very poor paper and creased covers.

Old and overpriced listings: what to avoid

  • Stale 2025 prints priced above the 2026 ones. Check that the listing title says “2026” and the seller is KD.
  • Check the seller name. For safe copies, look for KD PUBLICATION House on Amazon or KDPublicationin on Flipkart, or buy on kdpublication.com.
  • Generic sellers of Vol. 2 have shown MRPs above KD’s own.
  • Check the book on arrival. Flip through every page while you can still return it.

Free alternatives

  • Official SSC papers and answer keys on ssc.gov.in: the best free replacement for Vol. 2 and any paid PYQ book.
  • There’s no free grammar rulebook we can vouch for, and the “Neetu Singh PDF” uploads online aren’t from KD. This is where a paid book earns its price.

Frequently asked questions

Which Neetu Singh English book should I buy first?

English for General Competitions Vol. 1, 2026 edition, in the language you learn best in. Add recent SSC PYQs and a vocabulary book.

What is the difference between Neetu Singh Vol 1 and Vol 2?

Vol. 1 is the rulebook: 34 chapters of grammar and vocabulary. Vol. 2 is a practice bank on the same grammar topics, and KD’s latest edition is still from 2023, so it misses recent SSC papers.

Is Plinth to Paramount different from Vol 1?

No. From Plinth to Paramount is the older name of Vol. 1. Don’t buy both.

Should I buy Vol 1 and Class Notes together?

No. They cover much the same rules. Pick Vol. 1 for self-study, or Class Notes if it matches your lectures.

Is Neetu Singh enough for SSC CGL English?

For grammar rules, yes. For the full section you also need vocabulary, recent PYQs and comprehension practice. Our SSC CGL English books guide has the full kit.

Is Neetu Singh good for bank exams?

For grammar rules, yes. Bank English leans on long passages and, for PO mains, descriptive writing, so add daily reading and timed RC practice.

Is Neetu Singh useful for CDS English?

Yes, as the grammar base. Add vocabulary and comprehension practice; see our CDS books guide.

Neetu Singh or S.P. Bakshi: which is better?

Either, not both. Neetu Singh is simpler and suits beginners and Hindi-medium students; Bakshi is more detailed, English-only and has a bigger exercise bank.

Which vocabulary book should I use with Neetu Singh?

A dedicated vocabulary book such as Blackbook of English Vocabulary, plus the words that turn up in recent SSC papers. Vol. 1’s vocabulary chapters are a start, not enough on their own.

Can Hindi-medium students use Neetu Singh for English?

Yes. The bilingual Vol. 1 explains rules in Hindi; once a rule clicks, practise on English sentences, because the paper is in English.

Is Neetu Singh’s Spoken English useful for SSC?

Not for the written paper, which is multiple-choice grammar, vocabulary and comprehension. Buy it only to practise speaking.

Is there a free Neetu Singh English PDF?

Not from KD Publication, which sells only printed books. Use free official SSC papers for practice.
