The best SSC CGL books for 2027 start with Disha 33 Topic-wise Tier I PYQs, which covers all four sections with real SSC questions. Add one book only for the section you’re weakest in: Lucent’s General Knowledge, S.P. Bakshi’s Objective General English, R.S. Aggarwal’s Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning or, for maths basics, free NCERTs. This guide shows how to use each book chapter by chapter, the study order for beginners, working aspirants and repeaters, and what to skip.

How we checked this page: we matched every edition to the publisher’s and retailers’ own listings, took exam facts from the SSC CGL 2026 notice and SSC’s own notices, and compared our advice with the leading SSC CGL book guides listed under Sources. We don’t score or rate books. Our methodology · About PrepPick
How many books you need, and how to use them
Most CGL aspirants need four or five books at most: one book for each section that is new to you, plus one PYQ book. SSCIntel’s guide puts it at four (one each for Quant, Reasoning, English and GA) plus a previous-year compilation, “the one most people underuse”; ExamShortcut’s rule is “one main source per subject, plus previous-year questions (PYQs) and mocks.” If you already know a section, skip its theory book and go straight to its PYQs.
Use the same routine for every chapter:
- Learn the topic from one book (NCERT, R.S. Aggarwal, Bakshi, Neetu Singh or Lucent). Don’t start a second book on the same topic.
- The same day, solve that topic’s real questions in Disha 33 Topic-wise. SSCIntel’s advice is to “test a chapter the same day you finish it.”
- First untimed, then timed. ExamShortcut suggests solving PYQs by topic untimed first, then against the clock.
- Sort every wrong answer into concept gap, calculation slip, careless error or ran out of time, and log it. Only concept gaps send you back to the book (see the table below).
- Revise on a cycle. For GA facts, ExamShortcut suggests revising your notes on day 1, 7 and 21.
What each Tier-I section covers, and which book handles it
Topics are condensed from the SSC CGL 2026 notice (paras 13.10.1–13.10.4). The full lists, plus Tier-II, are on our SSC CGL syllabus page.
| Tier-I section | What the notice lists (in brief) | Book on this page |
|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence and Reasoning | Analogy, classification and series (semantic, number, figural), coding-decoding, Venn diagrams, paper folding and punched holes, embedded figures, indexing and matching, critical, emotional and social intelligence | R.S. Aggarwal Verbal & Non-Verbal |
| General Awareness | The environment and society, current events, everyday science, and India and its neighbours (history, culture, geography, economy, policy, scientific research) | Lucent GK (static), plus a current-affairs source |
| Quantitative Aptitude | Arithmetic (percentage to time and work), school algebra, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, and histogram, bar and pie charts. Pitched at 10th-standard level | NCERT 6–10 and, if needed, R.S. Aggarwal Quantitative Aptitude |
| English Comprehension | Understanding correct English, basic comprehension and writing ability | S.P. Bakshi or Neetu Singh Vol. 1 |
| All four | Real questions from past Tier-I papers | Disha 33 Topic-wise |
SSC CGL in brief (2026 notice)
- Stages: Tier-I is a 1-hour, 200-mark screening test with four sections and 0.50 marks off per wrong answer. Tier-II decides your rank, with 1 mark off per wrong answer in Paper-I.
- Minimum marks: 30% for UR, 25% for OBC/EWS, 20% for others (para 16.1).
- Where CGL 2026 stands: Tier I ran from 30 September to 30 October 2026, and SSC’s notice pencils in Tier II for December 2026. SSC’s 2026-27 calendar has no CGL 2027 entry yet, so watch ssc.gov.in.

Maths (Quantitative Aptitude)
| Book | Job | Skip if |
|---|---|---|
| NCERT Maths, Classes 6–10 (free on ncert.nic.in) | Rebuild basics: fractions, percentages, algebra, geometry, mensuration | Your Class 10 maths is solid |
| R.S. Aggarwal, Quantitative Aptitude (S.Chand, Fully Video Edition 2026-27) | Concepts plus a large bank of practice questions for beginners | You’re CGL-only and comfortable with Class 10 maths |
| Disha 33 Topic-wise, maths chapters | Real CGL maths questions, topic by topic | Never; this is your practice book |
How to use it: do one arithmetic topic at a time (percentage, profit and loss, ratio, time and work), learn it from NCERT or R.S. Aggarwal, then solve the same topic in Disha the same day. Keep a formula notebook and add every shortcut you learn from a wrong answer. Move to algebra, geometry and trigonometry once arithmetic feels easy.
R.S. Aggarwal Quantitative Aptitude, what to know. S.Chand sells it as “(Fully Video Edition) 2026-27”, but S.Chand’s own listing still gives © 2024, so it’s the same content under a new year label. Buyers like the number of questions and the easy explanations; a noticeable group complain about printing errors, and several say the questions stop short of SSC level. On r/ssc, some CGL-only aspirants say they regretted buying it, and on Quora the common view is that it builds a foundation but doesn’t fully give the shortcut methods, mixed-concept questions and data interpretation practice modern SSC papers need. Buy it if you’re an absolute beginner in maths or also preparing for bank exams. Our R.S. Aggarwal Quantitative Aptitude page has the full review.
Other maths books you’ll hear about:
- Rakesh Yadav (7300+ / Advanced Maths): Testbook calls it SSC-focused, type-wise practice “ideal after mastering basics”; ExamShortcut suggests his advanced maths only “after arithmetic is comfortable”, mainly for harder Tier 2 questions. Optional, as a second practice book. See our Rakesh Yadav 7300+ review.
- Pinnacle SSC Maths: StudyBlink’s review says it puts the latest questions first in each chapter and adds theory, but has fewer old PYQs than Rakesh Yadav or Kiran, and earlier editions had answer-key errors, so buy the latest edition. Optional; pick Pinnacle or Rakesh Yadav, not both.
- Rajesh Verma, Fast Track Objective Arithmetic (Arihant): ExamShortcut suggests it for more shortcuts and arithmetic practice, paired with a geometry source. Optional, instead of R.S. Aggarwal, not alongside it.
- Kiran chapter-wise maths PYQs: a PYQ book, so it does Disha’s job. Buy one PYQ series, not two.
- Quantum CAT and other CAT-level books: skip for CGL; they’re written for a different exam.

Reasoning (General Intelligence and Reasoning)
| Book | Job | Skip if |
|---|---|---|
| R.S. Aggarwal, A Modern Approach to Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning (S.Chand, Fully Revised Video Edition 2024-25, © 2025) | Teaches every question type with solved examples and practice | You can already solve the question types and lose marks only to speed |
| Disha 33 Topic-wise, reasoning chapters | Real CGL reasoning questions | Never |
How to use it: learn one question type (say, coding-decoding) from R.S. Aggarwal, then solve the same type in Disha. Reasoning is pattern-based, so once a type feels easy, switch to timed sets; ExamShortcut suggests daily timed sets of 20 to 30 questions over reading more books.
R.S. Aggarwal Verbal & Non-Verbal, what to know. Retailers market it as 2026-27; match the full title and the “Fully Revised Video Edition 2024-25” line in the listing, and on delivery check © 2025 and the S.Chand name on the copyright page. The linked Amazon listing shows “MY SELLER CLUB” as publisher, but its title and edition match S.Chand’s own listing. Buyers rate it among the most complete reasoning books and several complete beginners say it worked; the recurring complaint is some wrong questions and answer keys. It teaches question types from many exams, so you still need SSC PYQs.
Other reasoning books you’ll hear about:
- M.K. Pandey, Analytical Reasoning: ExamShortcut calls it “heavier than needed for Tier 1”, useful for Tier 2 puzzle practice. Skip for Tier I.
- Kiran or Pinnacle reasoning PYQs: again a PYQ book; only if you prefer them to Disha.

English (English Comprehension)
| Book | Job | Skip if |
|---|---|---|
| S.P. Bakshi, Objective General English (Arihant, Revised Edition 2026-27, 836 pages) | Grammar rules with topic-wise objective practice, English-only explanations | You want Hindi explanations |
| Neetu Singh, English for General Competitions Vol. 1 (KD Publication, 2026; English or bilingual) | Grammar from basics, with a bilingual edition | You already own Bakshi |
| Disha 33 Topic-wise, English chapters | Real CGL English questions | Never |
Buy Bakshi or Neetu Singh Vol. 1, not both.
How to use it: work through one grammar rule (subject-verb agreement, tenses, voice, narration), then solve error-spotting and fill-in questions on it from Disha. ExamShortcut suggests spending about half your English time on vocabulary and reading and half on grammar practice; a short daily newspaper or editorial read builds reading-comprehension and cloze speed.
S.P. Bakshi (revised), what to know. The old 3rd edition from July 2021 is now sold as “(Old Edition)”, even under titles with “2025” in them, so don’t go by the year in the title. The one you want says “Revised Edition” on the cover and in the listing title, names Arihant as publisher and runs to 836 pages; Amazon lists 9 Sep 2026 as its publication date. Buyers praise the amount of practice and the clear explanations; complaints on the revised edition are about paper quality and some MCQs without full solutions, and some buyers feel it suits intermediate learners better than complete beginners. Avoid an Amazon Bakshi listing whose publisher field reads “GERERIC” (the listing’s own label) with no edition details. If you own the 2021 edition, keep practising from it. It’s usually cheaper on Arihant’s own site. Our Neetu Singh English book guide compares the Neetu Singh volumes.
Other English books you’ll hear about:
- Neetu Singh, Plinth to Paramount: ExamShortcut and SSCIntel both list it for a structured grammar and vocabulary path. An alternative to Vol. 1, not an extra.
- Wren & Martin: ExamShortcut calls it a “reference for rules; do not read it cover to cover.” Skip unless your grammar basics are very weak.
- Word Power Made Easy (Norman Lewis) or Blackbook of English Vocabulary: ExamShortcut suggests Word Power for vocabulary over several weeks; Ashirwad’s guide suggests Blackbook with “20 words daily”. Optional: choose one vocabulary source if vocabulary is where you lose marks.

General Awareness
| Book | Job | Skip if |
|---|---|---|
| Lucent’s General Knowledge 2027 (sold as the 16th edition; Lucent’s own site still lists the 15th) | Static GK reference: history, geography, polity, economy, science | You own a recent Lucent; static GK barely changes |
| NCERT Science, History and Geography (free) | Explains concepts Lucent only lists | — |
| One dated current-affairs source you trust | Current events | — |
| Disha 33 Topic-wise, GA chapters | Real CGL GA questions | Never |
How to use it: Lucent is a revision book, not a one-time read. Read a chapter, solve its GA PYQs in Disha, mark the facts you missed, and revise those marks on the day-1, day-7, day-21 cycle. Do a little current affairs every day. SSC doesn’t publish GA topic weightage, so treat any “weightage” chart you see as someone’s estimate.
Lucent GK, what to know. Lucent editions look alike in listings, so check the “2027” on the cover, the edition line in the listing and the publisher name (Lucent Publication). The 15th edition (2025) is fine if you find it cheaper. Buyers are strongly positive on coverage; the recurring complaints are cheap paper, spelling mistakes, counterfeit copies from some sellers and “2026” listings that ship the 2025 print. On r/SSCCGL people agree it’s one of the best static GK sources but needs repeated revision and GK PYQs alongside it. It doesn’t cover current affairs or Tier II Computer Knowledge. Skip Lucent’s General Science for CGL; Lucent GK’s science chapters and NCERT science are enough. Our Lucent GK guide has more.
Other GA books you’ll hear about: ExamShortcut suggests M. Laxmikanth (Polity) and Spectrum (Modern History) only as selected chapters, since they’re written for civil-services depth. Kiran’s GA PYQ book does the same job as Disha’s GA chapters, so pick one.

Previous-year papers (all four subjects)
| Book | Job | Skip if |
|---|---|---|
| Disha 33 Topic-wise SSC CGL Tier I PYQs (2010–2025), 2nd edition, 2026, 464 pages | Real questions sorted by topic, for practice right after each chapter | — |
| Disha 33 Year-wise SSC CGL papers, 7th edition | Full papers for timed practice | You use the free official papers |
| Official SSC question papers and answer keys (free on ssc.gov.in) | Full timed papers | — |
Why Disha Topic-wise is our buy-only-one pick: it covers all four sections with real SSC questions, and the topic-wise layout lets you practise percentages straight after studying percentages. Disha says it holds 33 Tier I papers from 2010 to September 2025 in 64 chapters with 3,900+ MCQs. Thirty-three full Tier I papers would hold about 3,300 questions, so treat “3,900+” as Disha’s claim and check the contents page. Buyers like the topic-wise arrangement and the explained answers; one balanced review says you don’t get a large number of questions on each topic. It doesn’t cover Tier II or the 2026 papers, so add those free from ssc.gov.in. Disha hasn’t announced a 3rd edition.
Kiran or Pinnacle instead? Kiran’s chapter-wise PYQ books do a similar job (ExamShortcut lists them for “everyone, from the build phase”); see our Kiran Publications guide. Pinnacle puts recent questions first. Buy one PYQ series, not two. ExamShortcut also warns that memory-based papers circulated by coaching sites can differ from the real exam, so use them for patterns, not as exact questions.

If you keep losing marks in…
| Losing marks in | Fix it with | Don’t |
|---|---|---|
| Maths concepts | NCERT for that topic, then R.S. Aggarwal’s chapter, then Disha’s PYQs | Buy a second maths book first |
| Maths speed and calculation | Timed topic sets from Disha; a formula and shortcut notebook | Read more theory: SSCIntel’s point is that calculation and careless errors need drilling, not a new book |
| Reasoning question types | R.S. Aggarwal for that type only | Read the whole book cover to cover |
| Reasoning speed | Daily timed sets of 20–30 questions (ExamShortcut) | Add M.K. Pandey for Tier I |
| English grammar | One rule at a time from Bakshi or Neetu Singh Vol. 1, then PYQs | Own two grammar books |
| English vocabulary | One vocabulary source and the vocabulary questions in your PYQs | Buy a grammar book for a vocabulary problem |
| Reading comprehension and cloze | A daily newspaper or editorial read; timed RC sets | Skip RC practice until the end |
| Static GA | Lucent revision on a day-1/7/21 cycle + Disha’s GA chapters | Read Lucent once and move on |
| Current affairs | One dated source, a little every day | Rely on an old yearbook |
| Running out of time | Sectional timed sets, then full timed papers | Wait until you’ve “finished the syllabus” |
Buy by stage, not by subject
The same book can be a good buy in January and a waste of money in October. Find your stage first.

| You are | Buy | Order of use | Don’t buy yet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner, exam 9+ months away | Disha 33 Topic-wise + a theory book only for sections new to you; free NCERTs for maths and GK basics | One topic at a time: concept → same-day PYQs → error log. Sectional tests as soon as a section’s basics are done | The full set on day one |
| Working aspirant | Disha 33 Topic-wise + one book for your weakest section | Oliveboard suggests a focused 2–3 hours a day for working candidates, with weekend revision. Keep weekdays for one topic each; use weekends for timed sets and error-log review | Long theory books you won’t finish |
| Repeater | Usually nothing new; your annotated books + the free 2026 papers | Start from your error log and last mock analysis; rework weak topics, then full papers | New editions of books you own |
| Tier II candidate (now, for December 2026) | Your Tier I books; computer-awareness notes; JSO/AAO material if you applied for those posts | SSCIntel’s view: Tier I books carry you far into Tier II, which needs a slower second pass on Quant and English | New theory books |
| Last 2–3 months | Nothing new | Re-solve every PYQ you got wrong, revise Lucent and your notes, then full timed papers in the last 6–8 weeks | Anything new |
| Hindi medium | Samanya Gyan + Disha 33 Topic-wise | As above | R.S. Aggarwal Hindi QA, unless maths is your weakest area |
| Spending ₹500 at most | Disha 33 Topic-wise direct from Disha + free NCERTs and SSC papers | As above | Anything else until you’ve finished it |
Tier II needs material none of the books above covers. Paper I adds a qualifying Computer Knowledge section and a Data Entry Speed Test, and Paper II (Statistics, JSO) and Paper III (Finance & Economics, AAO) need their own material. Oliveboard suggests preparing for both tiers together so Computer Knowledge and typing aren’t left to the end.
Mock tests: when to start and what to check
- Start early with sectional tests. Oliveboard advises not waiting to complete the syllabus: start with topic-wise and sectional tests, then full-length tests once the basics are covered.
- Practise the real format: Tier I gives you 15 minutes per section, 60 minutes in total, with 0.50 marks off each wrong answer. Free official papers on ssc.gov.in are the best material; Disha 33 Year-wise is the print option.
- After every mock, check (Oliveboard’s list): questions attempted, right and wrong answers, time spent per section, topics with repeated errors, questions left for lack of time, and accuracy.
- Send each mistake to the right fix: concept errors back to the chapter, calculation and careless errors to timed drills (see the table above).
Hindi-medium students: what changes
| Need | English-medium pick | Hindi-medium pick |
|---|---|---|
| GK | Lucent’s General Knowledge 2027 | Lucent Samanya Gyan, Sunil Kumar Singh, 19th ed. 2026 (Amazon) |
| Maths | R.S. Aggarwal QA (English) | R.S. Aggarwal QA Hindi, © 2023: Amazon buyers mention translation mistakes, so buy only if you accept the occasional slip |
| Reasoning | R.S. Aggarwal V&NV | Tarkshakti Parikshan (© 2022; out of stock at S.Chand on 3 Nov 2026, so check the third-party listing’s edition, the S.Chand name and the printed MRP) |
| English | Bakshi or Neetu Singh Vol. 1 | Neetu Singh Vol. 1 bilingual |
Check the author: Lucent also sells a Samanya Gyan by Neeraj Chandra Choudhary, aimed partly at school-level entrance exams. The one you want is Sunil Kumar Singh’s 19th edition (2026): check the author’s name on the cover and in the listing title.
The English section is still tested in English, so whichever explanation language you choose, practise on English questions. Our SSC CGL books in Hindi guide covers the full Hindi-medium plan.
Free material that can replace a purchase
- Official SSC question papers and answer keys on ssc.gov.in. SSC publishes candidate response sheets with the actual questions. If you’re disciplined, these are enough for full-paper practice; paid books add topic-wise sorting and explanations. (The site runs on JavaScript, so look under the answer key and result sections.)
- NCERT textbooks on ncert.nic.in/textbook.php. Class 6–10 maths covers the basics many beginners buy R.S. Aggarwal for, and science, history, geography and polity NCERTs explain GK concepts better than any condensed book.
- The SSC CGL 2026 notice, with the full syllabus in paras 13.10–13.11: official PDF.
Fake and mislabelled copies: how to avoid them
- Check more than the cover. A buyer reports that Bakshi has no year printed inside, and S.Chand lists R.S. Aggarwal’s “2026-27” as © 2024. Match the listing’s title and edition field to the editions on this page, check the publisher name, and on delivery check the copyright page.
- Be wary of a “Generic” or blank publisher field, or a listing with no edition details, like the Bakshi listing flagged above.
- Look-alike Lucent listings exist. Check that the publisher shows Lucent Publication, and avoid “Generic” or unusually cheap listings; check the cover, the exact title wording and the seller too.
- Check on delivery. Missing pages (Bakshi) and misbound sections (Lucent Hindi) turn up in buyer feedback. Flip through every page while the return window is open.
- Buy from the publisher where you can. Disha and Arihant sell direct, often for less than Amazon. Lucent doesn’t sell online right now, so use a well-rated seller.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best book for SSC CGL preparation?
No single book covers everything, but if you buy only one, take Disha 33 Topic-wise Tier I PYQs, because it covers all four sections with real SSC questions. Add one theory book only for a section that is new to you (see the at-a-glance table).
What is the best book for SSC CGL General Studies (General Awareness)?
Lucent’s General Knowledge for static GK (Lucent Samanya Gyan by Sunil Kumar Singh for Hindi medium), free NCERT science, history and geography for concepts, one dated current-affairs source, and the GA chapters of a PYQ book. Revise Lucent several times rather than reading it once.
Is R.S. Aggarwal enough for SSC CGL?
Not on its own. R.S. Aggarwal’s Quantitative Aptitude builds maths basics and his Verbal & Non-Verbal teaches reasoning question types, but neither is written to SSC’s current pattern. Pair either with SSC PYQs such as Disha 33 Topic-wise and timed papers. If your Class 10 maths is fine, you can skip the maths book.
How many books do I need for SSC CGL?
Four or five at most: a theory book for each section that is new to you, plus one PYQ book. Never buy two books that do the same job, such as two grammar books or two PYQ series.
Which is the best SSC CGL book for a beginner?
Disha 33 Topic-wise, because it shows you what SSC actually asks, plus one theory book for your weakest section. Use free NCERTs for maths basics before paying for R.S. Aggarwal.
Kiran, Pinnacle or Disha for previous-year questions?
They do the same job, so buy one. Disha 33 Topic-wise is our pick for Tier I because it sorts real CGL Tier I questions by topic in one book. Kiran is a larger chapter-wise series, and Pinnacle puts recent questions first. Whichever you choose, add the free 2026 papers from ssc.gov.in.
Can I crack SSC CGL in 15 days?
Not from zero; CGL tests four sections, and books alone can’t compress months of practice into two weeks. If you have already prepared, use the last 15 days for revision, re-solving the questions you got wrong and full timed papers, and don’t buy anything new.
Should I buy 2026 or 2027 editions for SSC CGL 2027?
Buy the current editions on this page now. SSC’s tentative calendar for 2026-27 (dated 8 January 2026) has no CGL 2027 entry, so check ssc.gov.in for the 2027 notice. Static books such as Lucent and Bakshi change little; a 2021 Bakshi or a 2024 R.S. Aggarwal is still usable. A PYQ book is the one worth replacing when a new edition adds the 2026 papers.
Is SSC CGL difficult to crack?
It is competitive. The 2026 notice put the tentative vacancies at about 12,256 (para 3.1); SSC’s revised tentative vacancy list of 24 September 2026 gives 10,731, and SSC notes that final vacancies may vary. Tier-I only shortlists, and your rank comes from Tier-II, where a wrong answer costs a full mark.
What topics are included in SSC CGL Tier 1?
Four sections: General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension. The section table above gives them in brief; our SSC CGL syllabus page has the full official lists.
What is the SSC CGL salary?
The notice gives pay levels, not a salary figure: the posts run from Pay Level-4 (₹25,500–81,100) to Pay Level-8 (₹47,600–1,51,100), depending on the post (para 2 of the 2026 notice). In-hand pay depends on allowances and the city. Our exam pattern page lists which posts sit at which level.
