The Lucent GK book, Lucent’s General Knowledge by Dr Binay Karna and team, is a static-GK revision book: history, geography, polity, economy, science, computers and miscellany in one paperback. Buy the 2027 print (or the cheaper 15th edition), or Samanya Gyan by Sunil Kumar Singh if you study in Hindi. This guide covers which exams it helps, the chapters to read and skip, how to revise it, and the alternatives.

Which Lucent to buy in 2027

  • English: the 2027 print or the 15th edition. Amazon sells a Lucent’s General Knowledge 2027 (published 4 August 2026, publisher field “Lucent Publication”, 598 pages on the listing). Lucent’s own product page still shows the 15th edition (2025, 498 pages) on 3 Nov 2026, so the publisher hasn’t listed the new print yet. Either works for static GK. On 3 Nov 2026 the 15th edition was about ₹50 cheaper on Amazon.
  • Ignore the year in listing titles. Many listings call the 15th edition “2026”, and buyers on both Amazon and Flipkart report “2026” listings that delivered the 2025 print. Read the edition line on the copyright page when the book arrives.
  • Avoid the 2023 print that still shows up in Amazon searches, and anything older than 2020 (see replacing an older copy).
  • The listing confirms the title, not the year. Lucent uses the same book code for every edition, so check the cover year and copyright page instead.
  • Lucent isn’t selling online yet. Its own site shows the book as “Sold Out”, so buy from a well-rated seller or a local bookshop where you can inspect the copy.

The Hindi name clash. Lucent publishes two different books called Samanya Gyan. Sunil Kumar Singh’s (19th edition, 2026) is the Hindi counterpart to Lucent GK: different author and pagination, same job. This is the one you want. Neeraj Chandra Choudhary’s is a slimmer book whose publisher description lists school-level entrance exams (Netarhat, Sainik School, NTSE) alongside SSC and railways. On Amazon, also skip the Hindi listing titled “18th”, because the 19th is current. Some guides still call the 18th edition current, so check the cover.

Other “Lucent” names you’ll see: Lucent’s General Science is a separate five-part science book with objective questions (see the exam table). “Lucent India GK” on Flipkart is a listing name, not a title in Lucent’s catalogue, so skip it.

Decision chart: should you buy Lucent's General Knowledge? If you own a copy printed after 2020, keep it. If you are mainly preparing for bank exams, skip it and buy a banking-awareness book. If you are learning GK concepts from zero, read NCERT first. Otherwise buy one book in your medium: Lucent's General Knowledge, the 2027 printing or the 15th edition (2025), for English, or Lucent Samanya Gyan by Sunil Kumar Singh, 19th edition (2026), for Hindi. It does not cover current affairs or practice MCQs.
Three questions decide whether Lucent belongs on your shelf. It’s a static-GK revision book for SSC, railway and state exams, not a current-affairs or banking book.

Who the Lucent GK book is for: exam by exam

Exam How useful Read Pair with
SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS Core static-GK book History, Geography, Polity, Science, Miscellany; Computer once A GA PYQ book, current affairs. See our SSC CGL books hub, SSC CGL general awareness books and SSC CHSL books
SSC GD Core, in your medium The same, lighter on Economy Official SSC papers; our SSC GD books guide
RRB NTPC, Group D Revision book History, Geography, Polity, Miscellany; Physics, Chemistry and Biology to revise NCERT science up to Class 10; our RRB NTPC books and RRB Group D books guides
State PSC prelims Core for the GK part History, Geography, Polity, Science, Miscellany A state-specific GK source; current affairs
NDA, CDS Useful for the GK part History, Geography, Polity, Science Your exam’s own syllabus and papers
Banking (IBPS, SBI) Low Skip, unless static GK is weak A banking awareness book and current affairs
UPSC Prelims Supplement only Polity, Indian Geography and Science tables, after the standard books NCERTs and standard books: our UPSC booklist and UPSC NCERT guide

Lucent’s own description lists UPSC, state PSCs, SSC, railways, bank PO and many more. The table above is about how much it actually does for each. Anantam IAS’s Lucent guide makes the same split: a core book for state PSC, SSC and defence papers, which “still set the direct factual question”, and only a supplement for UPSC, whose questions are mostly statements to judge.

What’s inside: chapters to read and skip

Lucent’s product page describes the book as 10 chapters and an appendix. Here’s where to spend your time.

Chapter What it holds SSC, railway, state exams UPSC
1. Indian History Ancient to modern: dynasties, movements, sessions, viceroys Read, all three periods Modern-history tables only, after Spectrum
2. World History Revolutions, world wars, key dates Read once Skip
3. Geography World and Indian: rivers, passes, soils, crops, states Read, with an atlas Indian tables only
4. Indian Polity and Constitution Articles, schedules, amendments, bodies, Parliament Read; revise most Tables after Laxmikanth
5. Indian Economy Plans, institutions, banking terms, figures Read once; check every figure Skim
6–8. Physics, Chemistry, Biology Units, discoveries, diseases, vitamins Read; NCERT first if a concept is new Read the facts you’d otherwise forget
9. Miscellany Firsts, superlatives, days, awards, books and authors, sports, parks, organisations Read; high-yield for SSC Skip
10. Computer Basics, generations, abbreviations Read once (not enough for CGL Tier II computer knowledge) Skip

Cross-check anything that moves: district and state counts, office-holders, award winners, the latest amendment numbers and every figure with a year. A printed GK book lags the news.

Not inside at all: practice MCQs, current affairs, and real explanations. If a science or economy paragraph leaves you memorising words you don’t understand, read the matching NCERT chapter first.

How to read and revise Lucent GK

  1. Don’t read it cover to cover first. Start with the chapters your exam table marks “Read”, one at a time.
  2. Read a section, close the book, write what you remember. Then reopen it and mark only what you missed. Anantam IAS suggests a simple test: if you recall fewer than six facts in ten after a table, halve the table and try again.
  3. Practise the same week. Solve that topic’s previous-year questions (Disha or Kiran topic-wise GA books, or free SSC papers). The questions show which Lucent lines actually get asked.
  4. Revise in passes, not one heavy read. SSC aspirants on Reddit commonly advise 5–6 passes. Each pass reads only your margin marks and the chapters that cost you marks in mocks.
  5. Use it as a look-up book in the last 6–8 weeks. After each mock, look up every GK question you got wrong, and spend the rest of your GK time on current affairs.

If you keep losing marks in…

Losing marks in Do this Don’t
History dates and dynasties Lucent’s history tables + topic-wise PYQs Add a second GK compendium
Polity articles and amendments Lucent’s Polity chapter; update amendments from a current source Trust a pre-2020 copy’s Polity
Geography: rivers, places, parks Lucent’s tables with an atlas open Memorise lists without a map
Science concepts NCERT science (Class 6–10), then Lucent to revise Buy Lucent’s General Science before NCERT
Static GK (days, awards, firsts) Lucent’s Miscellany, revised in passes Expect it to cover this year’s awards
Current affairs A monthly current-affairs source Look for it in Lucent
Remembering what you read Close-the-book recall + PYQs the same week Re-read the whole book again
Statement questions (UPSC) Standard books and NCERTs Expect a fact book to answer them

Lucent vs the alternatives

Book What it is Choose it if Our take
Lucent’s General Knowledge Compact static-fact book, no MCQs You want quick, repeatable static-GK revision The default for SSC, railway and state exams
Arihant General Knowledge 2027 (Manohar Pandey) Static GK plus a current-affairs update, 632 pages You want more one-liners and a current-affairs section in one book Pick one of Arihant and Lucent, not both. Arihant also sells shorter 144- and 304-page “GK 2027” books, so check the page count. One Amazon buyer in June 2026 found out-of-date chief ministers in its state tables
Disha Rapid General Knowledge Concise static GK Railway or SSC revision in fewer pages gk2u describes it as more concise than Lucent; we haven’t compared editions
Manorama Yearbook Annual reference and current-affairs volume You want a yearly reference A different job (Anantam IAS); not a Lucent substitute
Lucent Objective GK A separate MCQ book You’ve finished Lucent GK and want extra MCQs Its questions aren’t SSC PYQs; buy a PYQ book first
Topic-wise GA PYQ books (Disha 85, Kiran) Real SSC questions by topic You’re aiming at SSC The best partner for Lucent; buy one, not both

Studyblink’s comparison makes the same split: Lucent for compact static revision for SSC, NDA and CDS; Arihant if you want current affairs and more explanation in one book, which it rates higher for banking.

Is Lucent GK enough on its own?

For static GK in SSC, railway and state exams, yes: it can be your only compendium if you revise it 5–6 times. For the whole General Awareness section, no. You still need practice questions, a dated current-affairs source and, for railways, NCERT science. One r/SSCCGL post from March 2026 sums it up: the student read Lucent cover to cover once and still got GK questions wrong, and the replies said to revise it in passes and add a topic-wise PYQ book.

For UPSC, no. Prelims GS Paper I covers current events, history, geography, polity, economic and social development, environment and general science (CSE 2026 notice), and its questions test concepts, so use NCERTs and standard books and keep Lucent for quick fact checks.

What buyers say

  • The praise is consistent: it’s comprehensive for one volume, especially on India-related facts, and good value. Flipkart buyers rate it highly overall, and recent Amazon buyers of the 2027 print call it new and up to date.
  • The complaints are consistent too: cheap paper, some spelling mistakes, and copies whose edition doesn’t match the listing title.
  • Fit for beginners: buyers suggest absolute beginners start with something simpler, and it suits people happy with dense text.
  • Old copies: Reddit users say a five-year-old copy is still usable, but Polity should be updated because amendments change it.
  • Samanya Gyan (Hindi, 19th edition): Flipkart buyers confirm receiving the 2026 edition; one Amazon buyer found badly bound pages after the return window had closed. Check every page on delivery.

Look-alike and mislabelled Lucent copies

  • Check the publisher field, but don’t stop there. It should say Lucent Publication; skip “Generic” or blank publishers. Some look-alike listings with oddly worded titles also show Lucent, so check the cover, the exact title and the seller too.
  • Check the edition on the copyright page, in the listing photos and again on delivery.
  • Skip unusually cheap listings far below what genuine copies sell for.
  • Treat “original” or “hologram” claims in a listing title as the seller’s words. Lucent’s own site doesn’t describe a cover hologram.
  • On delivery, look for blurred print, see-through paper and missing or repeated pages, and return it within the window if anything’s off.

Should you replace an older copy?

  • Post-2020 copy: keep it. Update Polity (amendments) and anything with a date or office-holder from a current source.
  • Pre-2020 copy: replace it. Pre-2020 prints predate the 2019 reorganisation of Jammu & Kashmir, so their polity and geography tables are out of date.
  • Exam within about 6 months: buy now, the 2027 print or the 15th edition.
  • Don’t pay above the printed MRP for any listing, whatever year its title claims.

Free alternatives that are genuinely enough

There is no free Lucent PDF from the publisher; the scans that circulate are old prints, so we don’t link them. These are legal and free:

  • NCERT textbooks on ncert.nic.in, in English and Hindi. They explain the why better than Lucent; use them for weak topics and Lucent for revision.
  • Official SSC question papers and answer keys on ssc.gov.in. Real exam questions, which no MCQ book can claim.

Frequently asked questions

Which Lucent GK edition should I buy for 2027?

The Lucent’s General Knowledge 2027 print on Amazon (published August 2026), or the 15th edition if you’d rather save money. Lucent’s own site still lists the 15th, and static GK barely changes between them.

Is the Lucent GK book enough for SSC CGL?

For static GK, yes, if you revise it several times. For the full General Awareness section you also need topic-wise PYQs and current affairs. Our SSC CGL general awareness books guide has the full kit.

Is Lucent GK useful for railway exams?

Yes, as a revision book for GK. Railway exams also test General Science, which NCERT science up to Class 10 teaches better; check the syllabus in your RRB notice.

Is Lucent GK enough for UPSC?

No. It confirms facts but can’t answer the statement questions in GS Paper I. Use it as a look-up after NCERTs and standard books such as Laxmikanth and Spectrum.

Is Lucent GK good for bank exams?

Not as a main book. Bank exams weight banking awareness and current affairs, which Lucent doesn’t cover; buy a banking awareness book instead.

Which chapters of Lucent GK are most important?

For SSC and state exams: Indian History, Geography, Polity, the three science chapters and Miscellany. For UPSC: the Polity, Indian Geography and Science tables only.

How many pages does the Lucent GK book have?

Lucent’s own page lists 498 pages for the 15th edition. Amazon shows 598 for the 2027 print and 460 for one 15th-edition listing, so go by the edition line, not the page count.

Lucent GK or Arihant GK: which is better?

They do the same job. Lucent is more compact for static revision; Arihant’s General Knowledge 2027 adds more one-liners and a current-affairs section. Pick one, not both.

Which Hindi Lucent book should I buy?

Lucent Samanya Gyan by Sunil Kumar Singh, 19th edition (2026). Don’t confuse it with Neeraj Chandra Choudhary’s Samanya Gyan, a different and slimmer book.

How long does it take to finish Lucent GK?

You don’t need to “finish” it. Read the chapters your exam needs, one at a time with recall and PYQs, then revise in passes. Anantam IAS’s plan covers its four core sections in four weeks at 30–40 minutes a day.

Does Lucent GK have MCQs or current affairs?

No. It’s a static-fact book. Practise with topic-wise PYQs or free SSC papers, and keep one dated current-affairs source.

Is there a free Lucent GK PDF?

Not from Lucent. The PDFs online are scans of old prints that aren’t from the publisher. Use free NCERTs and official SSC papers instead.
