Your exam. Your booklist.

UPSC book guides

UPSC Civil Services preparation has three stages: Prelims, Mains and the interview. Each stage asks something different of your books. Prelims tests broad, accurate recall in General Studies, and the CSAT paper is qualifying, so it needs enough practice to clear it safely. Mains rewards structured answers built on the same foundations. That's why most aspirants start with NCERT textbooks and then add one standard reference per subject: polity, modern history, geography and economy. A long booklist isn't the goal. Reading one good book several times usually beats skimming three. This hub brings together our UPSC guides: the complete booklist for Prelims and Mains, NCERT selection, subject guides for history and geography, CSAT, Hindi-medium choices and reviews of standard books such as Laxmikanth, Spectrum and G. C. Leong. Each guide shows which edition to look for, what overlaps with what you already have, and when free official material such as previous-year papers and the official syllabus is the better first step.
