The SSC GD syllabus is short, but many “SSC GD syllabus PDF” files on coaching and file-sharing sites are one- or two-page topic lists with no source. The official version sits inside SSC’s Constable (GD) notice: one computer-based exam with four parts of 20 questions each (Reasoning, General Knowledge and General Awareness, Elementary Mathematics, and English or Hindi), at Class 10 level. As of 27 Oct 2026, SSC hadn’t published the 2027 notice, so this page follows the 2026 notice of 1 Dec 2025. Below you’ll find the exam pattern, which official document to trust, the subject-wise syllabus, the PET and PST standards, how qualifying marks and the NCC bonus work, and free official practice.

2027 notice status: SSC hasn’t published the Constable (GD) 2027 notice yet (ssc.gov.in notice board, 27 Oct 2026). SSC’s tentative calendar planned it for September 2026, with the computer-based exam in January–March 2027. Until it’s out, this page follows the 2026 notice of 1 Dec 2025. Check ssc.gov.in for the 2027 notice and compare it with the tables below.

What is the SSC GD syllabus? One computer-based exam (CBE) with four parts of 20 questions each: General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Knowledge and General Awareness, Elementary Mathematics, and English or Hindi. That’s 80 questions, 160 marks and 60 minutes, at Class 10 level, with 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer. If you pass the CBE cut-off you go on to the physical tests (PET and PST), then the medical and document check.

Full selection process (para 14.1): CBE → Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST) → Detailed Medical Examination (DME/RME) and Document Verification. SSC runs the CBE; the CAPFs run the physical, medical and document stages (para 1.4).

Flow chart of SSC GD Constable selection: an 80-question CBE, then PET and PST, then medical exam and document verification; final merit is normalised CBE marks plus NCC bonus.
The CBE decides your rank; the physical, medical and document stages are pass-or-fail and add no marks. Built by PrepPick from the SSC GD 2026 notice.

Go by the notice. When the 2027 notice comes out, it replaces the 2026 one for the 2027 exam. Unofficial PDFs often add topics such as algebra, geometry or seating arrangement. They may be useful practice, but they aren’t in SSC’s indicative syllabus, so don’t treat them as official.

Subject-wise SSC GD syllabus

The official wording is in para 12.1.11. SSC calls it “indicative”, so questions can go a little beyond the list. The middle column is our plain-English reading.

Part A: General Intelligence and Reasoning (para 12.1.11.1)

SSC says the questions will be “principally of non-verbal type”.

The list doesn’t name algebra, geometry or trigonometry; those are in the CGL and CHSL syllabuses, not GD’s.

Part D: English / Hindi (para 12.1.11.4)

SSC’s wording is short: the candidate’s “ability to understand basic English/Hindi and their basic comprehension will be tested”. In practice that means grammar, vocabulary and short passages at Class 10 level, in whichever of the two you choose. For English, see our Neetu Singh English book page. For Hindi-medium books, see SSC books in Hindi.

SSC GD physical test: PET and PST standards

Only candidates shortlisted from the CBE take these. Ex-servicemen don’t run the race but are measured (para 12.3).

PET: the race (para 12.4)

  • Weight: proportionate to height and age, as per medical standards (para 12.5.3).
  • Relaxation needs a certificate: non-ST candidates claiming relaxed height or chest must bring the Annexure-IX certificate to the PET/PST. ST candidates need a valid ST certificate (para 12.5.4).
  • Appeal: if you fail height or chest, you can appeal the same day to the appellate authority at the centre (para 12.5.5).

Medical examination (para 12.6)

CAPF medical boards examine shortlisted candidates under MHA’s uniform guidelines for CAPF and Assam Rifles recruitment. The SSC GD 2026 notice (para 12.6.2) points to them on mha.gov.in. Read those guidelines for eyesight and other medical standards before the exam, not after.

Qualifying marks, NCC bonus and how merit is built

Minimum CBE marks to be considered for PET/PST (para 14.2), without the NCC bonus:

Category Minimum qualifying marks
UR 30%
OBC / EWS 25%
All other categories 20%

NCC bonus (paras 7.5 and 14.3), added to your normalised CBE score:

NCC certificate Bonus In marks (out of 160)
‘C’ 5% of maximum marks 8
‘B’ 3% of maximum marks 4.8
‘A’ 2% of maximum marks 3.2

The marks column is from SSC’s 12 Oct 2026 result notice for GD 2026. You must claim the bonus in the application form; it can’t be added later (para 7.5.1). The bonus is withdrawn if you can’t show the certificate at document verification (para 14.8). Ex-servicemen don’t get it.

How shortlisting and merit work (para 14):

  1. CBE to PET/PST: about 8 times the vacancies, shortlisted state-wise, area-wise and category-wise on CBE marks plus NCC bonus (para 14.4).
  2. PET/PST to medical and documents: about 2 times the vacancies, again on CBE merit (para 14.6).
  3. Final merit: normalised CBE marks plus NCC bonus, separately for men and women, for each State/UT and for border and militancy/Naxal-affected district quotas; SSF vacancies are filled on an All-India merit list (para 14.11). The physical tests are pass-or-fail; they don’t add marks.
  4. Force allocation: by merit and the force preferences in your form. You must fill all seven preferences, and they can’t be changed later (paras 14.9 and 14.12).

Free official practice

  • SSC mock test: the notice says a mock CBE is in the “Candidate’s Corner” section of ssc.gov.in (para 12.1.9). Use it to get used to the screen and the 60-minute clock.
  • Answer keys: after each CBE, SSC posts tentative answer keys with your responses; you can challenge an answer for ₹50 per question. Final keys and marks follow the result (paras 12.1.6–12.1.7). Use the latest keys to see what was actually asked.
  • Running practice: time a 5 km run (men) or a 1.6 km run (women) every week alongside your CBE preparation. The race is pass-or-fail and has no appeal.

FAQs

Is the SSC GD 2027 syllabus out?

Not yet. On 27 Oct 2026 the ssc.gov.in notice board had no Constable (GD) 2027 notice, although SSC’s tentative calendar planned one for September 2026 with the exam in January–March 2027. Until it comes out, the 2026 notice (1 Dec 2025) is the latest official syllabus.

What is the SSC GD exam pattern?

One computer-based exam of 80 questions in four parts (reasoning, GK, elementary maths, and English or Hindi), 20 questions each, 2 marks per question, 160 marks in 60 minutes (para 12.1). Shortlisted candidates then take the PET/PST, followed by the medical exam and document verification.

Is there negative marking in SSC GD?

Yes. 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer in the CBE (para 12.1.2). Unanswered questions lose nothing.

Is Hindi compulsory in SSC GD, or can I take English?

Part D is “English/Hindi”: you answer that part in one of the two. The rest of the paper is available in English, Hindi and 13 regional languages (para 12.1.1).

What is the SSC GD physical test?

The PET is a race: men run 5 km in 24 minutes and women 1.6 km in 8½ minutes (shorter distances for the Ladakh region). The PST checks height (170 cm for men, 157 cm for women, with relaxations for some groups) and, for men, chest (80 cm with 5 cm expansion). Both are pass-or-fail (paras 12.4–12.5).

What is the SSC GD salary?

All posts are at Pay Level 3, ₹21,700–69,100 in the pay matrix (para 2). Your in-hand pay depends on allowances, which vary by force and posting.

Do NCC certificate holders get extra marks in SSC GD?

Yes. ‘C’ certificate holders get 5% of the maximum marks (8 marks), ‘B’ 3% (4.8) and ‘A’ 2% (3.2), added to the normalised CBE score. You must claim it in the application form and show the certificate at document verification (paras 7.5 and 14.3).

Can I clear SSC GD in 1 month?

The CBE is short (80 Class 10-level questions in 60 minutes), but you also need to pass the cut-off for your state and category and then the physical tests. If you have a month, do timed full papers and start running practice at once.

Is the SSC GD exam easy or hard?

The questions are Matriculation level and the minimum marks are 30% (UR), 25% (OBC/EWS) and 20% (others). But shortlisting is about 8 times the vacancies, so real cut-offs can sit far above the minimum. In SSC’s 12 Oct 2026 result notice, for example, the UR cut-off for men shortlisted for the PET/PST against SSF’s All-India vacancies was 146.18. That figure is the normalised CBE score including NCC bonus marks, not a raw mark out of 160. Other forces’ cut-offs are set state-wise, so check the table for your state and category in the latest result notice.

Is the SSC GD syllabus the same as SSC CGL or CHSL?

No. GD is Class 10 level with one 80-question CBE and physical tests. CGL and CHSL are graduate and 12th level, with two tiers and harder maths. Compare with our SSC CGL syllabus and SSC CHSL syllabus pages.
