The best biology books for NEET 2027 are the NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks, read first, plus one NCERT-line MCQ book (MTG Fingertips) and one past-paper book (MTG 39 Years Biology). Trueman’s is optional, for topics NCERT explains too briefly. Biology carries 90 of the 180 questions and 360 of the 720 marks, so these are the books to get right. Below: who each book suits, and how to use it.

Best NEET Biology Books at a Glance

Book Best for Why How to use it
NCERT Biology Class 11 and Class 12 Everyone The main text: 32 chapters that map to all 10 NEET Biology units Read each chapter before any MCQ book; reread before every test
MTG Objective NCERT at your Fingertips Biology, 2026-27 Students with no NCERT-line MCQs in their module Topic-wise MCQs on the NCERT text, Class 11 and 12 in one book Same day as the NCERT chapter; mark every wrong answer
MTG NEET PYQ 39 Years Biology (1988–2026) Everyone, from the first finished unit Real NEET and AIPMT questions sorted by chapter After each unit, then again in revision
Trueman’s Elementary Biology Vol 1 and Vol 2 Self-study students who get stuck on NCERT’s short explanations Longer explanations and more diagrams Look up one topic at a time; don’t read it cover to cover
Disha NCERT Xtract Biology or Arihant Master the NCERT Biology Class 11 · Class 12 Students who want a different NCERT-line MCQ book Same job as Fingertips; Disha is one shorter volume, Arihant is split by class Instead of Fingertips, not as well as it
MTG Fingertips Biology (Hindi medium) Hindi-medium students The same Fingertips format in Hindi With NCERT Jeev Vigyan, the same way as the English book

If you buy only one book, make it Fingertips Biology; if money is tight, start with the free NCERT PDFs and the PYQ book (budget plan). All subjects: best NEET preparation books.

Which book do you actually need?

Your situation Buy Skip for now
Starting Class 11, no coaching NCERT XI, then Fingertips Biology Trueman’s until a topic stumps you
Coaching modules with NCERT-line MCQs NCERT + the PYQ book Fingertips (your module does its job)
Repeater, NCERT already read twice PYQ book + full timed papers A new theory book
Self-study, NCERT feels too brief NCERT + Trueman’s for weak topics + Fingertips A second MCQ bank
Hindi medium NCERT Jeev Vigyan + Fingertips (Hindi) English-only practice books
About 6 months to the exam NCERT + the one MCQ book you can finish + PYQ book Trueman’s and any second MCQ bank
Under 3 months to the exam NCERT rereads + PYQ book + full papers Anything with a new layout to learn

The rule behind the table: one reading book (NCERT), one practice book, one past-paper book. Each extra book needs a specific gap to fill.

With 6 months left: don’t start a new theory book. Reread NCERT once, work through one NCERT-line MCQ book chapter by chapter, and do the PYQ book alongside. Switch to full timed papers for the last 6–8 weeks.

Best Biology book for Class 11 and Class 12

Class 11: NCERT Biology Class 11 (19 chapters, Units 1–5), plus one NCERT-line MCQ book. Fingertips covers Class 11 and 12 in one volume; if you’d rather buy one class at a time, Arihant Master the NCERT Biology Class 11 is a Class 11-only volume (786 pages, 2026-27 listing).

Class 12: NCERT Biology Class 12 (13 chapters, Units 6–10), the same MCQ book (or Arihant’s Class 12 volume, 582 pages), and the PYQ book for both classes.

Class 11 beginner who needs more explanation: no reference book is trimmed exactly to the NEET syllabus. Trueman’s Vol 1 explains well but keeps chapters the syllabus doesn’t list (Transport in Plants, Mineral Nutrition, Digestion and Absorption), so skip those. If you want a guided book that sticks to the current 19 chapters, use an NCERT-line book such as Fingertips or Arihant’s Class 11 volume, whose contents follow the current NCERT chapters.

NCERT first: the workflow that uses these books well

  1. Read the NCERT chapter (free PDFs on NCERT’s textbook site). Read the diagrams, tables and examples too; Narayana’s NEET guide points out that many questions are built on NCERT’s lines, diagrams and tables.
  2. Same day, do that chapter’s Fingertips MCQs (or your module’s). Don’t look at the answers until you’ve finished a topic.
  3. Mark every wrong answer and go back to the NCERT line it came from. Write the fix in the NCERT margin, so everything you revise is in one place.
  4. When you finish a unit, do its chapters in the PYQ book. Past questions show which NCERT lines NEET has used and how it words them.
  5. Fill the gaps NCERT doesn’t cover (next section), from Trueman’s, your module or a practice book.
  6. Revise from NCERT and your margin notes, then sit full timed papers: 180 questions in 180 minutes, with Biology making up 90 of them.

Where NCERT isn’t enough for Biology

All 10 NEET Biology units have NCERT chapters: Class 11 covers Units 1–5 in 19 chapters, and Class 12 covers Units 6–10 in 13 chapters. But a few syllabus topics are missing from the current books (our unit-to-NCERT map has the detail):

  • Plant families (Unit 2): the syllabus names Malvaceae, Cruciferae, Leguminosae, Compositae and Gramineae. The current NCERT Ch. 5 describes only Solanaceae.
  • Insect and frog (Unit 2): NTA’s 2026 bulletin says this unit “should be read as of an insect and a frog”. NCERT Ch. 7 covers the frog but not an insect.
  • “Red Data Book” (Unit 10): the IUCN Red List is in NCERT, but the term isn’t.

Cover these from Trueman’s, your module or a practice book whose contents page lists them. See where NCERT isn’t enough for all three subjects, and our guide Is NCERT enough for NEET?.

Buying a printed NCERT: the current Class 11 Biology book has 19 chapters and Class 12 has 13. Some Amazon buyers complained that their Class 11 copy had 19 chapters instead of 22. 19 is right: the 22-chapter edition is the pre-rationalisation one. On 3 Nov 2026 the featured Class 11 offer came from a third-party seller (EXAM360) and was marked “Clearance sale – no return”, and the Class 12 offer was from the same seller. Check the seller and return terms before you order, or use the free PDFs.

How to check if a book follows the current NCERT and NEET syllabus

  1. Year on the cover or in the title: look for “2026-27” or “NEET 2027”. Old editions stay on sale from third-party sellers.
  2. Chapter count: Class 11 should have 19 chapters and Class 12 13 chapters (32 in all). Books built on the old NCERT had 22 and 16.
  3. Dropped chapters: the contents shouldn’t include Transport in Plants, Mineral Nutrition or Digestion and Absorption (Class 11), or Reproduction in Organisms, Strategies for Enhancement in Food Production or Environmental Issues (Class 12). None of these is in the 2026 NEET syllabus.
  4. Latest past paper: a 2026-27 book printed after May 2026 can include the NEET 2026 paper. Disha’s listing says it does; Arihant’s 2026-27 volumes are dated 31 January 2026, before that exam.
  5. Gap topics: check that the book covers the five plant families and the insect in Unit 2, which the current NCERT doesn’t.
  6. Ratings: Amazon can show the same ratings on old and new editions (the 2025-26 and 2026-27 Fingertips listings both showed 1,188 ratings on 3 Nov 2026), so ratings don’t tell you which edition you’re buying.

The unit list to check against is in our NEET syllabus guide.

MTG Fingertips Biology: the practice book most students need

Who it’s for: students whose coaching material doesn’t already have NCERT-line MCQs, and self-study students.

What it is: the 2026-27 edition (15th) puts Class 11 and 12 in one 1,248-page book, published 30 June 2026. Each topic has NCERT notes, then topic-wise MCQs on the NCERT text, plus NCERT Exemplar MCQs, assertion-reason and case-based questions, and model test papers (Amazon listing and MTG’s page).

How to use it: do a topic’s MCQs right after reading it in NCERT, not weeks later. Use it for retrieval practice, not as a replacement for the NCERT text. One buyer notes that some of its content goes beyond NCERT and can be skipped; the NEET syllabus decides what’s in scope.

Skip it if: your module already has NCERT-line MCQs that you haven’t finished. A second bank of the same kind of question adds little. More on the series: MTG Fingertips books.

Is MTG Fingertips Biology enough for NEET?

As your only MCQ book, yes; as your only book, no. Fingertips is a question bank built on NCERT, so you still need the NCERT text itself, past NEET papers (the PYQ book), full timed papers, and the few syllabus topics NCERT leaves out. Use NCERT + Fingertips + the PYQ book; adding a second NCERT-line bank (Disha or Arihant) mostly repeats the same questions.

Fingertips Biology 2026 vs 2027 (2026-27) edition

“Fingertips 2026” usually means the 2025-26 edition, written for NEET 2026. For NEET 2027, buy the 2026-27 edition.

2025-26 edition 2026-27 edition
Written for NEET 2026 NEET 2027
Amazon listing Published 26 May 2025, 1,120 pages 15th edition, published 30 June 2026, 1,248 pages
New features Trend indicator, HOTS, rank predictor Adds a Concept Priority Tracker, Mind Maps and Daily Practice Papers (MTG’s product page)
Chapter list Rationalised NCERT, 2025-26 session 19 Class 11 + 13 Class 12 chapters (MTG’s product page)

How to check the copy you’re buying: the title should say “2026-2027” and “15th Edition”, the publication date should be June 2026, and the page count 1,248. On 3 Nov 2026 the 2025-26 edition was still on sale from a third-party seller. If you already own the 2025-26 edition, you don’t need to replace it: the NEET syllabus didn’t change for 2026, so add the 2026 paper from the PYQ book instead.

MTG Fingertips vs Disha NCERT Xtract vs Arihant Master the NCERT

Short answer: all three are NCERT-line Biology MCQ books, so buy one, not two. Fingertips has the widest range of question types in a single volume; Disha is shorter and includes the NEET 2026 paper; Arihant splits Class 11 and Class 12 into separate, cheaper volumes. All details below are from each Amazon listing and publisher page on 3 Nov 2026.

MTG Fingertips Biology Disha NCERT Xtract Biology Arihant Master the NCERT Biology
Edition 2026-27, 15th ed. (Amazon) NEET 2027 (Amazon); the title says 12th edition, the details say 11th 2026-27 (Class 11 · Class 12)
Format One volume, 1,248 pages One volume, 816 pages Two volumes: 786 + 582 pages
Published 30 June 2026 14 May 2026 31 January 2026
Questions Count not stated on the listing 4,490+ MCQs “2K+” NCERT-based MCQs per volume in the title
NCERT alignment Topic-wise MCQs with an “NCERT Connector” MCQs in NCERT order with an “NCERT Page Locater”; marks questions that go “Beyond NCERT” “Line by line” MCQs, NCERT notes with “Most Important” and PYQ tags
Question types listed Assertion-reason, case- and graph-based, statement, matching, numerical, HOTS, Exemplar Matching, 2-statement and 4/5-statement, assertion-reason, application/HOTS, Exemplar, PYQs Topical, assertion-reason, statement, matching, Exemplar, past-exam questions
Explanations “Answer keys, hints and explanations” “Detailed explanations” for all MCQs Not described on the listing
Mock tests Model test papers 3 mock tests Chapter tests and NEET-pattern mock tests
NEET 2026 paper Not stated Yes, chapter-wise (listing) No: printed before the May 2026 exam
Suits Most students; one book for both years Students who want less theory and more questions, plus the 2026 paper Class 11 students buying one year at a time; Hindi edition available from Arihant

Buyer reports to weigh: Amazon buyers have reported answer-key mistakes in Disha (October 2025) and Arihant (May 2026), and one Arihant buyer reported badly printed diagrams (May 2026). These are individual reports, not a measured error rate.

Which gives the best question practice for NEET 2027? On the listings, Disha has the clearest count (4,490+ MCQs) and the most statement-based formats; Fingertips lists the widest mix of types, including graph-based and numerical questions; Arihant is the only one split by class. If you’re unsure, take Fingertips. Take Disha if you want a shorter book with the 2026 paper, and Arihant if you’re in Class 11 now.

Dr Ali vs MTG Fingertips, and Dr Ali vs Dinesh

Dr Ali Objective Biology vs MTG Fingertips: they’re different kinds of book. Fingertips stays close to the NCERT text; Dr Ali’s Objective Biology (SASA Publication, two volumes) is a larger objective-question bank. Amazon’s author page listed a 14th edition “for NEET 2027-28”, but we couldn’t open its product page on 3 Nov 2026, so we can’t confirm its page count, question count or explanations, and we haven’t linked it. Start with Fingertips; add Dr Ali only if you finish an NCERT-line book and still want more questions.

Dr Ali vs Dinesh Objective Biology: we can’t fairly compare difficulty, explanations or value, because we couldn’t check a current edition of either on Amazon. Amazon’s Dinesh listings were older (2020–22) or unavailable; a 2026-27 “Dinesh Objective NCERT Biology Vol 1 & 2” (S. Dinesh & Co.) appeared on another retailer, out of stock, advertising assertion-reason, statement-based questions and PYQs. Before buying either, check four things on the listing or sample pages: the edition year, a 19 + 13 chapter list, whether every question has a worked explanation, and whether the questions look like NEET’s statement and assertion-reason formats.

MTG NEET PYQ 39 Years Biology: past papers by chapter

Who it’s for: everyone, from the first unit you finish.

What it is: NEET and AIPMT Biology questions from 1988 to 2026, sorted by chapter and topic, with solutions; 490 pages, published 18 May 2026 (Amazon listing). One buyer reports that the 21 June 2026 Re-NEET questions aren’t in the printed book; another says the Re-NEET Biology paper could be downloaded as a PDF through MTG’s app.

How to use it:

  • During the year: do each chapter’s PYQs once you finish the unit, and note which NCERT lines keep coming up.
  • In revision: redo the questions you got wrong, then switch to full papers.
  • Old questions: skip any question on a topic that’s no longer in the current syllabus.

For other past-paper sets, see NEET PYQ books.

PYQs or Fingertips first? Fingertips first, chapter by chapter, while you learn; PYQs once a unit is done. PYQs before you know the chapter only tell you that you don’t know it yet.

Which book for assertion-reason, statement, matching and diagram questions?

Question type Where to practise Why
Assertion-reason Fingertips, Disha or Arihant (all list A-R questions) + the PYQ book The MCQ books give volume; the PYQ book shows NEET’s own wording
Statement-based (2 to 5 statements) Disha lists 2- and 4/5-statement MCQs; Fingertips and Arihant list statement questions Each statement tests a separate NCERT line, so read NCERT closely
Match the following Any of the three + the PYQ book Matches usually pair terms with examples or functions from NCERT tables
Diagram-based NCERT’s own figures, plus Fingertips (graph- and case-based) Cover the labels in each NCERT figure and name them; no book replaces the NCERT diagrams

We haven’t counted how many of each type the books contain; these are the types each listing names.

Trueman’s Elementary Biology: optional, for explanations

Who it’s for: self-study students who can’t follow a topic from NCERT and need a longer explanation, more diagrams or worked examples.

What it is: two volumes by K.N. Bhatia and M.P. Tyagi, Vol 1 for Class 11 (1,320 pages) and Vol 2 for Class 12 (1,104 pages). Trueman’s lists both as “Examination 2026-2027” editions. On Amazon, the Vol 2 title says so but the Vol 1 title doesn’t name a year, so check the cover year in the listing photos or ask the seller.

Watch out: Trueman’s contents still include chapters that the current NCERT books dropped and that the 2026 NEET syllabus doesn’t list: Transport in Plants, Mineral Nutrition and Digestion and Absorption (Vol 1), and Reproduction in Organisms, Strategies for Enhancement in Food Production and Environmental Issues (Vol 2). Skip those for NEET. Vol 1 has a chapter on the morphology and anatomy of animals (7A), which can help with the insect part of Unit 2; check what it covers first.

How to use it: treat it as a reference, not a second textbook. Read the topic you’re stuck on, then go back to NCERT and the MCQs. Some Amazon buyers of Vol 2 report receiving copies that weren’t genuine, so prefer an offer sold by the publisher or shipped by Amazon.

Skip it if: your teacher or module already explains things clearly, or your problem is recall rather than understanding.

Hindi-medium students

Use NCERT’s Hindi Biology books (Jeev Vigyan, free on NCERT’s site), the Hindi Fingertips Biology (2026-27, 1,248 pages, published 29 July 2026) and your module’s past questions. NEET’s Hindi-medium candidates get an English–Hindi booklet, so learn the key English terms too. More options: NEET books in Hindi.

Best NEET Biology books on a budget

Under ₹500: the free NCERT PDFs plus the MTG 39 Years Biology PYQ book (roughly ₹300–350). If you’d rather have an NCERT-line MCQ book, Disha’s Xtract or one Arihant class volume was roughly ₹400–500 each.

About ₹1,000: free NCERT PDFs (or printed NCERT, roughly ₹150–250 a book), then one MCQ book (Fingertips was roughly ₹650), then the PYQ book. That is the whole Biology kit; spend nothing on a second theory book.

Order to buy in: NCERT first (free), then the PYQ book, then one MCQ book. Prices checked on 3 Nov 2026.

Can I score 340+ in NEET Biology with only NCERT and Fingertips?

No book can promise a score, but NCERT + Fingertips + PYQs is a sound base for one. Biology is 90 questions and 360 marks at +4 and −1 (2026 bulletin). 340 means about 85 right with no wrong answers, or 86 right and 4 wrong, so you can afford to miss only about five questions. That takes:

  • NCERT read several times, including diagrams, tables and examples;
  • every Fingertips chapter done, with wrong answers fixed in your NCERT margins;
  • every chapter’s past questions, redone until you get them right;
  • the syllabus topics NCERT leaves out;
  • full timed papers in the last 6–8 weeks, with each mistake reviewed.

The books are enough material; the score depends on how completely you work through them.

A suggested NEET Biology study plan (NCERT + one MCQ book + one PYQ book)

This is a plan to adapt, not a promise of results. It assumes about 10 months and the 32 NCERT chapters.

Phase Daily target Weekly
Months 1–7: learn One NCERT topic (about 8–12 pages), then 60–80 MCQs on it from your MCQ book; 15 minutes on margin notes Finish about one chapter; on the weekend, do that chapter’s PYQs
Months 8–9: consolidate Reread one chapter of NCERT; 100 mixed MCQs; 30–40 PYQs from finished units One timed 90-question Biology set, about a minute per question
Last 6–8 weeks: test NCERT diagrams and margin notes; redo your wrong-answer list 2–3 full timed papers (180 questions, 180 minutes), each reviewed

If you have 6 months, compress the learning phase to about 4 months by doing a chapter every 4 days; with 3 months, skip straight to rereading and PYQs.

  • Pradeep’s and Pearson’s Objective Biology appear on older lists (BioTecNika’s list dates from 2022); Pearson had 2027 volumes on Amazon’s new-releases list on 3 Nov 2026. They’re big theory or MCQ books. Add one only if you’ve finished an NCERT-line book and the PYQ book and still need more questions.
  • Coaching modules (ALLEN, Aakash, PW): if you have them, they replace Fingertips. Don’t buy a separate set as well.

For Physics and Chemistry, see NEET Physics books and NEET Chemistry books.

FAQs

Which is the best biology book for NEET?

NCERT Biology Class 11 and 12. Every NEET Biology unit maps to NCERT chapters, so it’s the one book that covers the whole syllabus. Add MTG Fingertips Biology for NCERT-line MCQs and MTG’s 39 Years Biology for past papers.

Is NCERT enough for NEET Biology?

For reading, almost. A few syllabus topics are missing from the current books: four of the five named plant families, the insect in Unit 2, and the term “Red Data Book”. You also need MCQ and past-paper practice, which NCERT doesn’t provide.

Is MTG Fingertips Biology enough for NEET?

As your only MCQ book, yes; as your only book, no. You still need the NCERT text, past NEET papers, full timed papers and the few syllabus topics NCERT leaves out.

What is the difference between the Fingertips Biology 2026 and 2027 editions?

The 2026-27 edition (15th, published 30 June 2026, 1,248 pages) is the one for NEET 2027. It adds a Concept Priority Tracker, Mind Maps and Daily Practice Papers to the 2025-26 edition (1,120 pages, May 2025). Check for “2026-2027” and “15th Edition” in the title.

Which is better: MTG Fingertips, Disha NCERT Xtract or Arihant Master the NCERT?

All three are NCERT-line MCQ books, so buy one. Fingertips lists the widest range of question types in one volume, Disha is shorter with 4,490+ MCQs and the NEET 2026 paper, and Arihant comes as separate Class 11 and Class 12 volumes.

Which is better for NEET Biology, Dr Ali or MTG Fingertips?

Start with Fingertips, which follows the NCERT text. Dr Ali’s Objective Biology is a larger question bank to add only after you’ve finished an NCERT-line book. We couldn’t open a current Dr Ali product page on Amazon, so check its edition and explanations before buying.

Which Biology book is best for NEET Class 11?

NCERT Biology Class 11 plus one NCERT-line MCQ book: Fingertips (both classes in one volume) or Arihant Master the NCERT Biology Class 11. Use Trueman’s Vol 1 only for explanations, and skip its chapters that aren’t in the syllabus.

Which Biology book is best for NEET Class 12?

NCERT Biology Class 12 with the same MCQ book (or Arihant’s Class 12 volume) and the MTG 39 Years PYQ book, which covers both classes.

Which NEET Biology books are best under ₹500?

The free NCERT PDFs plus the MTG 39 Years Biology PYQ book. If you want an MCQ book instead, Disha’s Xtract or one Arihant class volume fits that budget (prices checked 3 Nov 2026).

Can I score 340+ in NEET Biology with only NCERT and Fingertips?

No book guarantees a score. 340 of 360 leaves room for only about five lost questions, so you need NCERT nearly complete, every Fingertips chapter, all past questions and full timed papers.

Should I buy Trueman’s or MTG Fingertips?

They do different jobs. Fingertips is practice (MCQs on the NCERT text); Trueman’s is longer explanation. If you buy one, take Fingertips, and borrow or buy Trueman’s only if you keep getting stuck on NCERT explanations.

Is Trueman’s Biology good for NEET?

It’s a good reference for explanations and diagrams, but it’s long (1,320 + 1,104 pages) and includes chapters the 2026 NEET syllabus doesn’t list, such as Mineral Nutrition and Environmental Issues. Use it topic by topic.

Do I need Fingertips if I have coaching modules?

Usually not. If your module has NCERT-line MCQs, finish them first. Buy Fingertips only if you’ve run out of NCERT-based questions.

How should I use the PYQ book?

Do each chapter’s past questions once you finish the unit, then redo the ones you got wrong in revision. Use the questions to see which NCERT lines NEET has tested, and skip questions on topics that are no longer in the syllabus.

Which Biology books should Hindi-medium students use?

NCERT Jeev Vigyan (Class 11 and 12) and MTG’s Hindi Fingertips Biology, plus your module’s past questions. The NEET booklet for Hindi candidates is bilingual, so learn the English terms for key concepts as well.

Do I need new Biology books for a repeat attempt?

Not if your annotated NCERT and practice books still match the syllabus. The NEET (UG)-2026 syllabus was unchanged from 2025, and no 2027 syllabus had been released as of 3 Nov 2026. Add the latest year’s past questions rather than buying everything again.
