The best books for NEET 2027 are the NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks for Physics, Chemistry and Biology, backed by one MCQ book where you are weak and a previous-year paper book. For Biology, which is 90 of the 180 questions, add MTG Objective NCERT at your Fingertips (2026-27); for past papers, MTG NEET PYQ 39 Years. This guide shows how to use each book, the order for Class 11, Class 12 and droppers, and what to skip.

How many books you need, and how to use them

Keep it to NCERT + one practice book + one PYQ series per subject. Most students who struggle don’t lack books; they own five and finish none. Narayana’s NEET guide puts it simply: “one book revised 3 times beats three books read once.” So add a second book only for a subject where you keep losing marks.

Use the same routine for every chapter:

  1. Read the NCERT chapter first, including diagrams, tables, examples and the summary. Make short notes from NCERT only.
  2. Solve that chapter’s practice questions (Fingertips, your module or D. C. Pandey) the same week.
  3. Solve that chapter’s PYQs from the 39 Years book.
  4. For every wrong answer, find the NCERT line it came from and write the mistake in an error notebook (concept gap, formula slip or careless error).
  5. Open a reference book only for the topic you’re stuck on. Careers360’s NEET 2027 book guide gives the same advice: don’t read a reference book cover to cover just because you own it.
Flow chart of NEET books by subject, from NCERT to practice to past papers. Biology, 90 of the 180 questions: NCERT Biology XI and XII (19 and 13 chapters), then MTG Fingertips Biology 2026-27 if self-studying, then MTG NEET PYQ 39 Years Biology (1988–2026). Chemistry: NCERT Chemistry XI and XII Parts I and II plus notes for Physical Chemistry, then Fingertips Chemistry only if your module has too few chapter questions, then MTG NEET PYQ 39 Years Chemistry. Physics: NCERT Physics XI and XII Parts I and II plus regular numericals, then H. C. Verma Part 1 only if concepts don't click, then MTG NEET PYQ 39 Years Physics or the set of three. In the final three to four months, buy nothing new and take full timed papers, including NTA's free 2026 papers.
NCERT first for every subject, one practice book only where you need it, and one PYQ series for all three. Biology is half the paper, so it is the one subject where most self-studying students add Fingertips.

Biology: NCERT plus one practice book

Book Edition Job Skip if
NCERT Biology XI and XII Current (rationalised), 19 + 13 chapters Main text, read several times Never
MTG Objective NCERT at your Fingertips Biology 2026-27 NCERT-line MCQs after each chapter Your module already has NCERT-line MCQs
MTG NEET PYQ 39 Years Biology 1988–2026 Past questions by chapter —

How to use NCERT Biology. Read it line by line, more than once, with special attention to diagrams, labels, tables and examples; many questions are built on these. If you see buyers complaining that “chapters are missing”, they are comparing against older 22- and 16-chapter prints from before the 2022-23 cuts. MTG’s 2026-27 Fingertips follows the same 19 + 13 chapter structure (its contents page on mtg.in lists Class 11 chapters 1–19 and Class 12 chapters 1–13), so don’t hunt for old editions.

MTG Fingertips Biology (2026-27) is the add-on most self-studying students need. It follows the rationalised NCERT chapters and adds NCERT-line MCQs, Exemplar questions, assertion-reason items and model papers. Solve a chapter right after you read it in NCERT, then redo only the questions you got wrong during revision.

What buyers say: buyers call it one of the best NEET Biology MCQ books, praising questions that follow NCERT topic by topic and the value for money. Forum users add a caution: some questions go beyond NCERT, and a few answers or explanations are wrong, so settle doubtful ones against the textbook.

What about Trueman’s or Dinesh? Careers360, Shiksha and NEETsheet list Trueman’s Biology for fuller explanations and extra diagrams, and Careers360 suggests Objective Biology by Dinesh for MCQ practice close to the exam. Treat them as optional: open Trueman’s only for a topic where NCERT feels too brief, and don’t add a second MCQ book on top of Fingertips. NEETsheet’s advice fits most students: “resist the urge to add a third heavy reference.”

Chemistry: match the book to the branch

Chemistry is three different jobs, and the NEET book guides we compared agree on this split.

Branch What it needs Use
Inorganic Memory of NCERT facts, tables and exceptions NCERT only, revised often, plus PYQs
Organic Reactions, mechanisms and conversions NCERT + PYQs; a reaction chart you make yourself
Physical Formulas and numericals NCERT examples and exercises + your module or Fingertips Chemistry

Fingertips Chemistry (2026-27) is optional. One buyer calls it good for beginners and close to the NEET syllabus, but a little below JEE Main level. Buy it only if your module has too few chapter questions.

Specialist books other lists name: NEETsheet and NEET World suggest M. S. Chouhan for Organic mechanisms; Careers360 and Narayana suggest O. P. Tandon or N. Awasthi for Physical numericals. These are good second books for a branch that keeps costing you marks, not first purchases; Narayana suggests using Chouhan selectively. For Inorganic, the guides we compared agree that NCERT is enough. Our NEET Chemistry books guide compares the choices branch by branch.

Physics: practice matters more than a second theory book

Book Edition Job Skip if
NCERT Physics XI and XII (four books) Current Concepts, derivations, examples Never
MTG NEET PYQ 39 Years Physics 1988–2026 Past questions by chapter —
D. C. Pandey, Objective Physics Vol 1 (Arihant) NEET 2026-2027, 917 pages Extra NEET-style MCQs by chapter PYQs and your module already give you enough questions
H. C. Verma, Concepts of Physics Part 1 Bharati Bhawan, revised reprint 2015 Concept help for one stuck topic Concepts are clicking after NCERT

D. C. Pandey is the Physics MCQ book named most often in the guides we compared (Careers360, NEETsheet, Narayana, NEET World and Shiksha). Use it after the concept is clear, not as your first read; Careers360 says the same. The 2026-2027 Volume 1 was published on 25 Oct 2026. Its Amazon description text is for a different Arihant book, so go by the title and cover, and avoid the “(Old Edition)” 2025-26 listing. Arihant also sells a Volume 2; check which chapters it covers and buy it only when you reach them.

H. C. Verma is a respected concept book, but its text hasn’t changed since the 2015 revised reprint, and the “Session 2026-27” labels are just print years. Careers360 suggests it only for topics where NCERT feels too brief, such as mechanics and electricity. Most NEET aspirants on forums call the full book more than NEET needs. Buy the two single-part listings, not reseller “sets”. Skip Irodov: NEET World calls it out of NEET scope, even though some older lists still name it. Fingertips Physics is the weakest of the three Fingertips books for numericals.

If you keep losing marks in…

Weak area Fix it with Avoid
Biology facts and diagrams Another NCERT pass, redrawing diagrams from memory; Fingertips for that chapter A second Biology MCQ book
Biology MCQ accuracy Fingertips + Biology PYQs, then reread the NCERT lines behind each wrong answer Reading reference books instead of NCERT
Physics concepts NCERT again, then H. C. Verma Part 1 for that topic only Solving all of H. C. Verma
Physics numericals Physics PYQs, then D. C. Pandey for the same chapter Fingertips Physics as your only numericals book
Physical Chemistry NCERT exercises, module questions, then O. P. Tandon or N. Awasthi for that chapter A new full theory book
Organic Chemistry Your own reaction chart from NCERT + Chemistry PYQs; M. S. Chouhan if still weak Memorising without solving conversions
Inorganic Chemistry NCERT tables and exceptions, revised often Any extra Inorganic book
Time and speed Full timed papers: NTA’s free 2026 papers and a test series Buying more books

Previous-year papers: MTG NEET PYQ 39 Years

You may know this series by its older name, “NEET/AIPMT Chapterwise Topicwise Solutions”. The current edition, MTG NEET PYQ 39 Years: Chapterwise Topicwise Solved Question Papers (for the 2026-27 exam), covers 1988–2026 and was published on 18 May 2026.

How to use it: solve a chapter’s PYQs as soon as you finish that chapter, then re-solve the ones you got wrong during revision. Keep full, untouched papers (NTA’s 2026 papers) for timed practice later.

Re-NEET 2026 paper: check before you buy the English book The original NEET UG on 3 May 2026 was cancelled, and NTA held a re-examination on 21 Jun 2026. On 3 Nov 2026 MTG’s English 39 Years product pages listed “1988-2026 with NEET 2026 Paper” and offered “free Re-NEET papers post 21st June 2026”, without saying whether the 21 June paper is printed in the book. Some buyers of the MTG set say the 21 June paper was missing from their copy. So check the contents page or the listing for the 21 June 2026 re-exam paper before you buy the English book. MTG’s listing for its Hindi combo says the books include the “NEET 2026 Original & Re-NEET Papers”. If the paper is missing, download it free from NTA (below).

What buyers say: buyers like the topic-wise layout in each chapter and the detailed answers. Complaints are about thin paper and the Re-NEET question above.

Alternatives with the same papers: the PW NEET PYQ 39 Years set of 3 (its listing advertises additional PYQs from Re-NEET and other states) and Arihant 39 Years (the listing names all three subjects in 1,169 pages, so check whether it is one volume or a set). Choose by solution style; buy only one series. Our NEET PYQ books comparison goes deeper.

Your study order: Class 11, Class 12, droppers and the last months

You are Buy now Order of use Skip
Class 11 or just starting NCERT XI (or PDFs); Fingertips Biology NCERT chapter → Fingertips → that chapter’s PYQs once you own them Class XII books, extra references
Class 12 with boards NCERT XII; the PYQ set NCERT serves both exams, so read it first; PYQs after each chapter; revise Class 11 chapters weekly New theory books
Dropper / repeat attempt Nothing new at first; your annotated NCERT and Fingertips First month: a full NCERT pass to find weak chapters; then targeted practice from the weak-area table; then timed papers Replacing books just because the cover year changed
Last 3–4 months Nothing new NCERT, your error notebook, re-solved PYQs and full timed papers, including NTA’s free 2026 papers Any new 1,000-page book or module

Narayana’s guide suggests one full mock a week at first and two a week closer to the exam, analysing errors the same day. Whatever the number, mark every paper with NTA’s answer keys and send each mistake back to NCERT.

When to buy NCERT. New Class XI books are reported for 2027-28, and no Class XII date has been announced. NEET 2027 and 2028 aspirants should buy the current books now. Today’s Class 10 students should wait for the new Class XI books and a matching NMC syllabus.

Coaching-institute modules (ALLEN, NEETprep and similar): when they’re worth it

Coaching institutes sell their printed modules online: ALLEN’s 24-module NEET-UG package (theory and NEET-style questions for all three subjects, 4,868 pages), plus separate Biology, Physics and Chemistry packs; NEETprep’s Masterclass in Biology and High Yield MCQ books; Aakash, PW and others have their own. On 3 Nov 2026 ALLEN’s full package cost ₹9,999 on its e-store, against ₹1,431 for Fingertips Biology and the MTG PYQ set on top of free NCERT PDFs. NEETprep’s PYQ book stops at 2025, while MTG’s covers 1988–2026.

  • Worth it if: you’re joining that institute’s course or test series and want the same sequence on paper.
  • Skip them if: you have NCERT and Fingertips Biology and your weak spots are in one subject (buy that subject’s book instead), or you’re in the final 3–4 months, when a new 1,000-page module is too much to finish.
  • Either way: NCERT stays the main text, and NTA’s free papers stay your timed practice.

Fake copies, overpriced NCERTs and old editions

  • Every NCERT carries its printed price on the back cover. On 3 Nov 2026 Amazon sellers were above it on 3 of the 10 NCERT science books, so check before you pay. Authorised NCERT vendors (listed on ncertbooks.ncert.gov.in) sell at the printed price.
  • NCERT buyers report blank or missing pages, reversed printing and faint diagrams. Flip through every page on delivery and return faulty copies.
  • Old-edition MTG books still appear in searches, for example MTG Complete NEET Guide for the 2024 exam, and the “38 Years” PYQ sets (1988–2025) from MTG and PW. Check that the cover says 2026-27 for Fingertips and 1988–2026 / 39 Years for the PYQ books. The 2025-26 Fingertips is still listed; skip it.
  • For H. C. Verma, buyers check for the Bharati Bhawan name and logo, a sign that fakes circulate. Avoid “second hand” tags and unfamiliar bundles.
  • Free “NEET books PDF” uploads of these titles on file-sharing sites are unauthorised copies of unknown edition. The NCERT PDFs and NTA papers below are the free, official ones.

  • MTG NEET PYQ 39 Years (Hindi): MTG sells a Hindi Physics, Chemistry and Biology combo for 2026-27, and its listing says it includes the NEET 2026 original and Re-NEET papers.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best books for NEET 2027?

NCERT Class XI and XII for Biology, Chemistry and Physics as the main text, MTG Fingertips Biology (2026-27) for NCERT-line Biology MCQs, and MTG NEET PYQ 39 Years (1988–2026) for past papers. Add Fingertips Chemistry, D. C. Pandey or H. C. Verma Part 1 only for a subject where you keep losing marks (see the glance table).

How many books should I buy for NEET?

One practice book and one PYQ series per subject on top of NCERT is enough for most students. Add a second book only for a weak branch, such as Physical Chemistry numericals, and finish what you own before buying more.

Which NEET preparation books should I buy first?

NCERT Class XI and XII for all three subjects (or the free PDFs), then MTG Fingertips Biology if you study on your own. Add MTG NEET PYQ 39 Years once you have finished chapters to practise.

Is NCERT alone enough for NEET?

NCERT is the main text, especially for Biology and Inorganic Chemistry, but reading alone isn’t enough. You need chapter MCQs, past papers and timed full papers, and you should check your books against the official syllabus.

Can I prepare for NEET at home with self-study?

You can cover the content at home: NCERT (free PDFs), one practice book where you’re weak, and the MTG PYQ books, following the study order above. No book list guarantees a score; what moves it is the chapter routine and timed papers. Take NTA’s free 2026 papers under exam timing and mark them with NTA’s final keys.

H. C. Verma or D. C. Pandey for NEET Physics?

They do different jobs. H. C. Verma explains concepts; D. C. Pandey’s NEET edition gives NEET-style MCQs by chapter. If NCERT concepts are clear, PYQs plus D. C. Pandey is the more useful pair for NEET. Neither is compulsory.

Trueman’s or MTG Fingertips for NEET Biology?

They do different jobs. Fingertips is for NCERT-line MCQ practice; Trueman’s adds explanations and diagrams where NCERT is brief. If you buy one, take Fingertips, and use Trueman’s only for topics you can’t follow from NCERT.

Should I buy MTG Fingertips and a PYQ book together?

Only if you need both. Fingertips gives NCERT-based practice questions; MTG NEET PYQ 39 Years gives the real past papers by chapter. If you can afford only one book per subject, take Fingertips for Biology and the PYQ books for Physics and Chemistry.

Do I need the newest version of every NEET book?

No. A newer PYQ edition is worth it if yours stops before 2026. NCERT text and H. C. Verma don’t change with the cover year.

What if I don’t clear NEET this year?

You can sit NEET again. The NEET (UG) 2026 information bulletin (Chapter 6, eligibility) sets a minimum age of 17 by 31 December of the exam year, says there is no upper age limit and lists no cap on the number of attempts; check the 2027 bulletin when NTA publishes it. For books, keep your annotated NCERTs, Fingertips and H. C. Verma, because their content doesn’t change with the cover year. Replace only your PYQ book if it stops before 2026, or add the free 2026 papers from NTA. Start with a full NCERT pass to find your weak chapters (see the study order above).

Are coaching modules like ALLEN’s better than NCERT and MTG?

Not for most self-studying students. Modules suit students following that institute’s course or test series; on their own, NCERT plus Fingertips Biology and a PYQ series covers the same ground for a fraction of the cost.
